Good question, I believe every living being is wondering the answer to that one. There are many theories to be had.
Some believe that there is another realm beyond this one where ones soul goes until the judgement of time occurs.
Some believe there exist a place called purgatory which is said to be a middle gray area where we are held suspended until the Creator decides our fate and destiny. I think our soul and spirit wander about the universe awaiting captivity by either those whom inhabit heaven or our fate is decided an we must descend to that firey lake spoken of in the Bible. Guess I should research a little more and see if I can get a better answer or leave it alone at that. Thanks for asking, difficult to give an informed opinion.
I wrote a hub called "Beyond Death: What the Bible Says", based on my study of Scripture. Using only the Bible (without the Catholic Apocrypha books), it is evident that immediately upon physical death, the souls of people who have accepted Jesus Christ as their Savior go immediately to Paradise (third heaven). Souls of people who have rejected Jesus Christ as their Savior go immediately to the bottomless pit (aka hell: Hades).
The Bible says the souls in Christ will return with Him when He comes to reign for a thousand years, at which time their bodies are resurrected as imperishable (first resurrection). After the millennial reign, the unbelievers' souls will be reunited with their bodies (second resurrection) to stand before the judgment seat of Christ and go to their final destination, the Lake of Fire (aka hell: geenna). The saints will live forever with Christ in the New Heaven and New Earth, the capitol of which will be the New Jerusalem.
I agree with Judah's daughter. Purgatory is not Biblical so that eliminates that possiblity. When Jesus was crucified with the two criminals, one of them repented and Believed on the Lord Jesus. He was saved as he hung there on the cross. The criminal said to Jesus, "Lord, remember me when you come into Your kingdom." Jesus replied, "Assuredly, I say to you, today you will be with Me in Paradise." This is a strong indication that when a believer dies, he/she is immediately in the Lord's presence. Also, Paul writes in 2 Corinthians 5:8 ,"We are confident, yes, well pleased rather to be absent from the body and to be present with the Lord."
Personally I don't believe anything happens after we die. I think this is the afterlife. We've already lived and this is the final review before it all goes away... Either that or we get reincarnated, which means you should learn as much as you can now because it will help you in the next life. As you can see I'm not entirely sure what I believe.
That all depends on what your belief system says happens after death. It's going to vary a lot from religion to religion. What's common to all, of course, is that no living person truly knows the answer.
All Humans know that our body is just a way to connect with the world and once that perishes, it is the soul that matters in the end. Now the question as to; what happens once our body is no more...different religions have different views on how our soul is purified and how we attain a new life. However, the bottom line is that there is life even after death of our body. Of course, during that time, we are in a different world which WE as humans are not aware of.
I have written a similar hub on your above question...check it out!

Can only Christians and those who accept Jesus Christ go to heaven?According to Christianity, only those who have openly accepted Jesus Christ and the Christian faith may go to heaven. If that is the case, what about the African tribe who has never heard of of Jesus? Even if they are good people,...

What happens when a Christian dies? Do they instantly go to heaven or do we sleep and await Jesus Christs return? The bible says "to die is to be with the Lord" but the Bible also says that the dead will rise when the last trumpet blows...so what happens? Is this a contradiction or...

Christians: If there is no hell, would people still die? There are certain laws in the universe that we must abide by to survive, such as gravity. Yet, if we don't follow this law then the consequences could be death. Why would God allow people to suffer horrendous consequences on this earth but...

Are you born with your soul looking the way you do when you die?Or, when you die old do you grow young in the afterlife, and die young you grow old? Is there an age limit after death?

I've read about many different theories about death and what happens. It is the main question that is in the back of everyone's mind. It's very difficult to picture it or to question the point of existence. The fact that we are here is a miracle in itself, who says that some sort of afterlife isn't...

Are you worried about what happens after you die?I have two fears for when I die: I'll basically cease to exist, have no consciousness, etc. Or, that there is an afterlife and I'll learn the meaning of life, which could be devastating if I handled life wrong!
