I think what we believe and what we think has as much to do with the effect of food on our organism as our choice of food. There are people who eat whatever they want and have no problems and others who react sensible on practically everything they put into their mouths. There are people who smoke and drink and get to over 80 years of age, and there are others who keep from everything and die young from cancer because they believe in passive smoking and the dangers of that. There are people in India who live from practically waste and have no detrimental side effects from it, while others in civilized countries blame their high powered diet for everything that happens to them.

When we eat something and BELIEVE it is good for us, I'm sure it won't harm us, but when we eat it and are doubtful, it may.

That expression is not specifically for what we eat, nor does it usually have fatal connotations, but is used to illustrate that not everything is suitable or enjoyed by everyone and doesn't just mean foods.
It can extend to other areas of life such as work, surroundings, music, art - in fact anything. In other words, what's good for one, may not be good for another.
