Would you consider Atheism as a new religion.
If you really think about it, they are always trying to convince others to not believe in God. So some what they are trying to convert others to be atheism. They also think because you are a christian you are delusional and out of your mind. If you read up on the books they write and stuff, just appears to me as another cult or religion, getting people to join theirs. Well it seems than really they are no different than any other religion.
I consider Atheism the abscence of religion that is diffent than belief. If some one has a particular belief it doesn't have to be religion based. A religion is a series of beliefs that are based on that religion. The same could be said of cults, are they not a religion in a sense and vice versa. These semantics are all personal beliefs in different dogmas not based on fact or fiction. Lets not catagorize beliefs in whatever.
All of the worlds major religions employ certain rites and rituals into their respective faiths. Some are similar, and some are very different.
Therefore, we can't consider Atheism as a new religion
If religion is a belief in something and atheism is disbelief, how can atheism be a religion? Seems contradictory.
In my mind, religion and atheism are diametrically opposed, the first being a set of beliefs generally accompanied by some sort of ritual observances and usually based on the existence of a higher entity, while the second is the lack of beliefs in precisely such higher entity. However, I guess in an offhanded sort of way, the lack of beliefs in itself can be considered a belief on its own Funny that.
To Kahana: The fact that many articles repeat there are no coincidences doesn't make it any truer than my constantly repeating I'm handsome to anyone who will listen HAHA I wonder why randomness is so unacceptable, but that's beside the point, because indeed there is no or very little randomness in the way the universe is arranged – nature has found optimal ways to preserve itself, so evidently patterns will be repeated, without any proven need to have a cosmic whatever doing the job. Plus, you're not answering the question, but never mind that, I suppose
not in the least. religion is about fear and control. being an athiest means you are controled by anything like religion. it isn't about faith, believing in a book. i never try to change how others believe but rather i express how i think. even if it became some kind of religion, i would never be a part of it.
It is not a new religion but it is a religion from the beginning of humanity. Their number 1 doctrine that they will take to the grave with them is simply this: There is no GOD and our GOD is a myth GOD. I will be on the other side of death going to the specially prepared place that GOD have waiting for me that GOD shown me in a vision of the other side of death on August 1, 1982 A.D. a Sunday morning. When the atheist die they will come face to face with our myth GOD and will be in shock that our myth GOD is the real GOD known as I am Alpha and Omega. That is just the facts. Good luck with our myth GOD.
I think the beauty of atheism is that you adapt to your own beliefs rather than following a trend. You believe in what you want to believe and if people choose to agree with your individuality, they too can become athiest. I don't think it could be labeled as a religion. I am athiest just because I don't believe in God. I don't study or preach it and I still accept people's individual beliefs as their own because everyone is different. I wouldn't look at a Christian or Muslim any different for their beliefs just as I wouldn't expect them to treat me any different for not believing at all.
Saying that "atheism can be a religion" is such a contradictory statement that it quite effectively cancels itself out.
The lack of belief requires no organization of it or those in agreement of their lacking
As the Dali Lama says, Buddhism is an unGodly religion. However, Buddhism is a philosophy, when you come right down to it. As for atheists trying to convince others not to believe in God, that is not my experience. As I see it, many atheists just don't believe in God and that is that. For those that are trying to convince others not to believe in God, it seems that is just more territorialism. I am sure those people try to convince others to believe whatever they believe, whether it is following the local baseball team or saying their country is the best. I think it is less about God and religion and more about wanting others to believe what they believe, whatever their belief is about anything.
Atheism ... is the state of Rejecting the Idea, of a God, via Stories ... Its the Failure of a Religion, followed, by the Rejector ... to clearly State The Truth of His Reality.
Thus, Atheism, Primarily, is, the Rejection of False Stories ... Hence, the "first Step" towards Truth.
In these times of huge advances in human Understanding, via Science and Technologies ... all 'stories' will Perish, in the wake of Sciences and Technology's onslaught.
This destruction of False Belief, in very near future, will be universal ... And will herald, the "Age of Islam" ... Truth !
For Islam is neither Contra-Logical, Anti-Sciences, nor a Metaphysical Belief ...
Islam, Is, The Ordained Way, of Life for Humans.
No. Atheism is a belief--specifically, the belief that God does not exist (or at least that there is no evidence that God exists.)
But while some religious traditions call for specific beliefs, those beliefs aren't the whole religion. And some religions--Buddhism is an example--need not include belief in a God at all. However, most all religions *do* include shared spaces, rituals, and practices, none of which apply to atheism per se.
Of course, in theory you could perfectly well create a religion which included atheism as a part of its ideology (can't call it 'theology,' now can I?)
atheism is not disbelief. Belieiving in nothing is still believeing. And technically, they don't believe in nothing. Even I - an agnostic - admit to having a belief system. Mainly that I believe there is no evidence there is a god, and there is no evidence there is not a god.
And many of the statements I've read here so far about atheism "not being a religion" kind of smell like fundamentalist defences to me.
i guess atheism is a religion.

Just a question, but it would seem if there really were no God, then Atheists couldn't exist. Is Atheism a religion? They definitely seem to be unified by a common belief.

Does belief require something to be a known (to know) to exist? Does to know something mean there is belief (rather than simply suggest) that it exists? If there are more than a singular known existing as truths, then does a belief system exist? If a belief system truly exists then can practicing...

Why do so many people have misperceptions about atheism and agnosticism?
by yoshi97 14 years ago
Before I go into this discussion, we all need to understand that I am not a scientist, I am not a prophet, and I am not an expert on the topic. I am merely trying to offer my belief in how atheism occurs. And why some of you might not like what I am about to say, understand that it is not meant as...
