How much of life is destiny and how much of it is freewill?

The battle between destiny and freewill can go on forever. Can we come to a compromise and see how both affect us?

Tough question, (maybe) ... It can be seen as a tough question in my opinion because You made a statement before the question: "The battle between destiny and freewill can go on forever".

We can perhaps minimize the perception of that battle You speak of, by saying that Destiny regards more the Spirit and Freewill regards our Will. What I am trying to say, is that we can use our Free Will to reach our Destiny. Thus, why perceive a battle?

To clarify this question we would have to first see if we both have the same understanding of the word "destiny" and "free-will". From the answer Mr. Ptosis gave, I can see that people understand "free will" and "destiny" in different ways. I by no means would indulge in thinking that a parasite can simply and on its own affect either my destiny or my free will ... Just my opinion.

This would make a good article for discussion, I think.

Good question - much to think about. Thank You.  : )

Wonderful thought which adds another dimension to the question - "Why perceive a battle?"

Am also thinking, feeling and searching...

By battle, I referred to the endless debate I have seen whether everything is destiny or freewill!
      Thanks smile

      Mr. Aravind,
the "endless battle whether everything is destiny or freewill",  sounds a little too simplistic in my mind. I do know that some people think that way but I like Oscar Wilde's thoughts that "The truth is rarely pure and never simple" smile

As a professional psychic, I no longer believe in Destiny. I've seen too many people use their Free Will to change their lives to believe in a fate where you have no choice.

The concept of Destiny also doesn't jive with the concept of the loving God who gave us Free Will in the first place.

There are people still unaware of Free Will which you have seen in so many. So, does it not make sense that a Loving God creates 'Destiny' for those that are thus ignorant just as a mother cooks for her child who does not yet know how to cook?

God has created us in this world with the supreme blessing of freewill. Destiny is something also can be created by constant pursue of anything essentially positive for a positive result and negative will reap some negativity at the end for sure. So life is all about freewill for me.

You have the evolution of your past life’s which brought you to this current cycle – that you cannot do anything about. You have the Karma of the life you were born into in this cycle, your parents, your country, the lifestyle you were raised in – these you cannot do anything about. You have the moments between childhoods end and death to make a difference this time around, but there are still outside influences, good and bad. In answer to your question I would say about 17.3 – 27.9% of free will is available to the average user.
But then an ex girlfriend could have had a kitty fetish and then you are just,,reincatinated.

Very interesting and quantified answer. Even Karma is nothing but 'Free Will' of a previous birth right? So I guess the overall percentage of 'Free Will' should be higher across births! Right? smile
Your answer maybe is for the present life...

Yes aravind, the above answer concerns an estimated guess as to how much free will a soul could have in this existing life, in our present condition so to speak. If you take into account the past lives of lesser beings I would think the percentage of

i dont think it's destiny but i do think that freewil is limited. We are entirely a result of what has happened around us, who we know and every single experience we have had and how this has influenced us. We never make a decision out of nowhere, the choice has to be open to us and it is only a choice because of our cirumstances and our circumstances determine whether we want to do something or not. Destiny seems predetermined, i just we are just wholly influenced and so free will is limited (if existent really).

My mind spins when I think about this question.  I first think, how did we come into existence spiritually, then how did the spirit get embodied?  Did we have a say in the very begining? If no then there is no free will.  We did not do the creating, even if things evolved by some cosmic evolution of which we are just a tiny part of, how did we really get here on this planet?

I know I would not choose to be here, I want to be on some other planet, or in a different part of the universe where I have mystical abilities and I do not have to work to maintain.

My conclusion is if we have freewill at all it is minute.  THink about it so many egos running around trying to do what they want to do how could a will really be free here with so many restrictions.

    Best wishes.

Very powerful line of thought... My experiences with my Master seem to lead me to a conclusion that the entire universe is nothing but the reflection of that one Divine Spirit. We are one - so the terms destiny and freewill are synonymous!

I am not sure how I came across this Mr. Arvind but I did, several years ago: The Law of One (http://www.lawofone.info/). It is a nutty read but for me, it was beyond words ... we are All One: it is the Law of One. Cheers!

Hats off to this question.I wonder, what actually set you to think about such a question.Destiny by its very definition is one which can't be controlled.Yes, i had this question popping up in my mind on many occasions.I even tried to take a statistics of a few happenings in and around my life.It nearly revealed me that destiny and freewill are in 50-50 range. But the only dilema one encounters when trying to separate the happenings under these two headings is-which to where? This where our intelligence plays a role. This recognation plays an important role in controlling the happenings in life by finding ways to control it.This recognation also have paved way for many inventions and dicoveries.Let us pray 'may we be given the wisdom to know the difference between the two'.Now, did you ask this question to control the controllable actions in life?To control the uncontrollable, let us develop an equanimity of outlook.

Man is like a serpent with two heads. One head goes ahead freely and predetermines the path of the second head. The other head merely follows the natural movement imposed by its body. Man is both Master and Slave.
