How did Lucifer earn his name?

Did Lucifer earn his name from "staring into the light" for too long?

Lucifer is believed to be Satan's name before he became a fallen angel, his name literally means "Bringer of Light" (notice the roots luz and cifer).  He was no longer known as Lucifer when he was cast out of heaven along with "one third of the heavenly host."  Remember that he was one of God's children in heaven as well, and therefore had a name just like everyone else did.

That's his stage name. His birth name was Louis C. Furr.

There's a great, huge misconception about the name Lucifer. At some point in the development and translation of scripture, the name Lucifer was attributed to Satan, which in many ways could be seen as the very first misdirection and obfuscation of things. Lucifer, the bringer of light, is hardly attributable to Satan, the deceiver. This web page does an excellent job of showing precisely when interpretation and translation went wrong:

The word Lucifer is Latin, and in no way a fallen ex-angel as taught and believed by many Christians.

Well now I am really confused.  I thought that Lucifer was God's "Right Hand Man".  The most beautiful, loved Angel of Heaven.  Then one day Lucifer got with his peers and said hey let's get rid of God.  Hearing this God threw him out of Heaven?

There is no confussion. Gods right hand man is Christ (Rom 8:34), not an angel. His first angel is Michael, hence the word "Arch" meaning first.
