    What is Freedom?

Do human's have freedom?  From where do we receive freedom?  Does freedom mean being able to do whatever you want?

Technically speaking, no thing or person has total freedom.   We are all subject to the inexorable laws of being.   We live in a universe in which both physical and phychological laws are prevalent.   We cannot escape gravity.  We cannot escape the physicality of our bodies growing old and eventually becoming inhabitable.   We cannot stop nightfall and dawn.  We cannot push back time, or leap ahead of it to find out what will definitely happen tomorrow - or even a few minutes from now.

Then there are the restrictions on our freedom we never become aware of. For example, the limits of our intellectual abilities, or the 'brainwashing' we've received from our parents, peers and society at large as to what is possible for us.   The parameters of our own acceptance of others ideas of what is true and what isn't hem us in.  But you ask 'What is freedom?'

Freedom would be the right to choose and to act on anything that came to us where a decision was called for.  Freedom might also be the right to refuse to decide.  But as it has been rightly said, to refuse to decide is a decision.  So looked at that way we don't have freedom.

However, I'm thinking that you're thinking about the restrictions on freedom put upon us by other people.   If this is right, then freedom is, once again, the right to choose and to act on anything that comes to us where a decision is called for, and not to have the act or acts we've decided upon thwarted by another.

Well, that's my opinion at this time.   Thankfully, Hubpages have given me the opportunity to answer this questions freely.

Freedom is that which is afforded to those who's ancestors chose, and died for. It is much more than just a word, it is a "privilege" many take for granted.
