Do people who attend church/worship strive to become better individuals?

Your spiritual growth happens in your own time.  Not everyone matures spiritually however you should become a better person over time.  Your behavior, actions, and mentality surely can not be the same as it was ten years ago.
I just don't understand how people can sit in a pew and not be touch spiritually and inspired to become a better person-whatever your religion might be.  Do some people sit in church, time after time, and never take "the message" to heart to guide their life?  Even an atheist can admitt if people  followed the ten commandments the world would be a better place.

I suspect a lot of people that go to church would rather be someplace else doing something else.
Many go out of a sense of obligation to loved ones who want to go. Others go for the sake of their children because they want them to have some exposure to religion during their formative years.
There are also those that go for the "entertainment" value. Maybe they love the choir/band, they're attracted to a fellow member, hoping to meet a "god fearing" man or woman, or simply for the social benefits. Sermons usually aren't the big draw for most people.
There are lots of folks who were out clubbing and fornicating on Friday/Saturday night that show up for church on Sunday morning. They have no plans to make any changes! For them if it's Sunday you go to church! If everyone bought into "Love thy neighbor as thyself" the world would be a better place. Few if any of us live it!

"clubbing and fornicating on Friday/Saturday, church on Sunday morning"..that's true. Don't forget the occasional smell of alcohol in the foyer.  Although everyone grows on their own time some fundamentals should be present: do the right thing is one

Good question and you are right.  There are people who think going to church once a week and putting money in the collection plate will excuse them for what they do the rest of the week.  Sometimes they are there in body but not in mind, for example rather be home watching the football game.  Sometimes they are bored with the service.  They should check out other churches-even if it is out of their denomination-and find one they can connect with.

That is so true. It makes me wonder if they realize there is no "credit" for showing up versus being involved and taking spiritual principles and practice.
