Michelle, it depends on what you believe. Some people think they go to another world, a heaven or hell. Some people think they are sitting in the ethers above us, watching and intervening if necessary. I personally think that we are all part of the same consciousness. If that's the case, then yes, they are with you because they are you. Furthermore, you will always have them in your mind, which is you. So, technically, they will always be with you.
It depends on what you believe in. Religion is one of the key factors that influences such matter. For me, I believe that the spirit only stays and lingers if and only if that person has unfinished business to deal with after death. These people are those who died on accidents, suicide, murdered (without justice being serve), and so on and so forth.
It is a very hard question because no one went there and came back .. but all of us wish that they are still with us.
There are many stories of people dying, having experiences of the afterlife, and coming back. A simple Google search should bring up a bunch of stories. Are the stories true? Who knows. Are they projections of the mind/imagination? Who knows.
I believe that our loved ones stay with us always. What actually happens after death may be unknowable, something that may lie beyond what we, as physical beings, are able to comprehend or imagine. Have a great day.

Would you find it unacceptable for someone to request no funeral, someone you loved? I don't think I would want to put my kids, family, and friends to the expense, disruption, and awfulness of a funeral but would that be 'cheating' them somehow? If they're going to come see me, I'd prefer it to be...

When you know your writing may disturb others, do you change it or stay your course? At 14, my writing got me exiled into remote wilderness for a summer. At 17 a classmate wrote, because I shared a dream in the high school newsletter, 'I wish Gary Smith would leave us alone.' Over the years my...
