Perhaps they all "spoke" communicating simply by mental telepathy.  Surely that would make it necessary to call a halt to their foolishness.

Clive I think we need look no further than a one year old. They communicate in a special language that loved ones understand. Words are not needed. From then on it is taught what language we speak.

This is only acceptable if you believe in the bible.
"The Bible says that before the Flood, all mankind “continued to be of one language and of one set of words.” (Gen. 11:1) The Bible indicates that the language later called Hebrew was that original “one language.” (See below.) This does not mean that all other languages stemmed from and are related to Hebrew but that Hebrew preceded all other languages."

BTW, if God didn't figure out that mankind was a mistake after Adam and Eve and the forbidden fruit, and that was followed by Cain killing Abel then certainly he should have figured it out at Babel.

That is when three strikes and you are out, but no God allowed it to continue. One example of failure after another for centuries, and on and on, till today.

Scrambling language, how did that help humans, or God?
