NFL teams which have not appeared in a Super Bowl game

Updated on September 13, 2013

I wonder if there will be a time in the distance future that there would be only one NFL team left which hasn’t appeared in a Super Bowl game. The level of parity that exists in the NFL makes it easier for the number of teams, four, decrease in say five years. The first Super bowl was played in 1967 after the 1966 regular season was finished.

Cleveland Browns

The first Cleveland Browns team left their records behind when they moved to Baltimore. Nevertheless, I vision this franchise as an expansion team since they had to form a whole new roster when they started to play in 1999. They have made to the playoffs only once. That was in 2003.

I don’t see this team being close to a Super Bowl contender. They have a relatively new owner in Jimmy Haslam. He bought the team in 2012. However, there’s been negative stories about the way he had ran his business. Also, the team has an unproven man, Rob Chudzinski, as the head coach. It’s his first such position. At least he has Norv Turner as his offensive coordinator. Norv is also the quarterbacks coach. NFL analysts view him as a great tactician on offense. Their defensive coordinator is Ray Horton. We shall see how well running back Trent Richardson will do in the NFL.

Detroit Lions

The Detroit Lions have a lot of players who were first-round picks. Thus, they are a talented team. The perception with the players is that they don’t know how to win important games. They certainly are, to me, fun to watch on offense with quarterback Matthew Stafford, wide receiver Calvin Johnson and running back Reggie Bush. Matthew could complete a lot of passes just by throwing the ball close to Calvin, who is 6 ft. 5 in. tall and weighs 236 lbs.

After the Lions made to the playoffs in 2011, ‘they had to make improvements to their mediocre running game. Jahvid Best didn’t the whole season because he had concussion problems. He subsequently didn’t played any games in 2012. In 2012, they didn’t drafted a running back. After they signed free agent running Reggie Bush in 2013, they drafted a running back in the sixth round. They still have Mikel Leshoure to back up Reggie.

The Lions have defensive tackles Ndamukong Suh and Nick Fairley to clog up the middle. As an unite, the defensive players as viewed as being average. They need better players on the secondary.

The head coach for the Lions is Jim Schwartz. Their offensive coordinator is Scott Linehan. Their quarterbacks coach is Todd Downing. Their defensive coordinator is Gunther Cunningham.

Houston Texans

The Houston Texans is a relatively new team. They came to the NFL as an expansion team in 2002. They went to the playoffs in 2011 and 2012. I see this franchise as the one that could possibly be in a Super Bowl game by 2018. --This hub was written in 2013.--

The negative aspect of having successful regular seasons in the NFL is that other teams want to signed your players. That’s what happened to the Texans’ defense in 2013. Nevertheless, they now have free safety Ed Reed. At least they still have running back Arian Foster and wide receiver Andre Johnson. They could use another wide receiver to step up and be consistent to complement Andre. I don’t think a tight end would suffer because they need to spread their opponents’ defense.

As the Texans’ defense find new ways to be a cohesive unit, they now have good reasons to see if quarterback Matt Schaub is a capable player that could lead the team to the Super Bowl. he needs to connect with his wide outs and make excellent decisions in the second half of games. The offense could draw up aggressive plays that will have them gain a lot of yards. I noticed the Atlanta Falcons are doing that.

The head coach for the Texans is Gary Kubiak. Their offensive coordinator is Rick Dennison. Their quarterbacks coach is Karl Dorrell. Their defensive coordinator is Wade Phillips.

Jacksonville Jaguars

The Jacksonville Jaguars had some good years during their early years. They played their first NFL season in 1995 as an expansion team. Back then they had Tom Coughlin as their head coach. He was fired in 2003. There were on-field and off-field changes that happened to be detrimental to the franchise. They haven’t made the playoffs since the 2007-2008 season.

The Jaguars haven’t had much players in their history that were marketable. Right now I see their majority owner, Shahid Khan, as the most popular man of the franchise. He is the first Pakistani-born person to be an NFL owner. He bought the team in November 2011. He perhaps can be more famous for the kind of mustache he always have than being from Pakistan.

The Jaguars have Blaine Gabbert (2011 first-round pick) as their quarterback. He has wide receiver Justin Blackmon (2012 first-round pick) to throw the ball to. The team also has running back Maurice Jones-Drew and wide receiver Cecil Shorts lll. I don’t know much about the team’s defense.

The head coach for the Jaguars is Gus Bradley. Their offensive coordinator is Jedd Fisch. Their quarterbacks coach is Frank Scelfo. Their defensive coordinator is Bob Babich.
