The problem with it being a lathe SA Williams is that there isn't a power source to turn the piece of wood. It is all operated manually by hand.

SA Williams, a lathe was my first thought also, but your arm would get so very tired after manually turning this massive thing. But that was a wonderful effort in trying to figure out what this thing is , and please don't stop trying to guess.

Ok , thank you. Are any of the parts on the ends movable or fixed.
I think, but I'm not positive, that the ends do rotate. Keep in mind Terrie that there is no motorized mechanism of any kind on this thing what so ever.
