Have you ever been to a nude beach? If so, what was your motivation for going?

Do you think that Americans are more modest when it comes to nudity than say, Europeans? Why or why not?

Yes; however, I did not go to see nude bodies.  There are two (2) sides to the beach and the nude side just happens to be the most beautiful portion of the stretch.  It is located on Martha's Vineyard at Gay Head and I go there nearly every summer for two or three weeks.

In my Younger days my Barracks roomate and I would go to Monaco on long weekends from our barracks in Germany, We would hang out on the nude beach looking for what all healthy 20 something males are looking for (Conversation with a beautiful girl) quite often found it.

Certainly....Americans are much more conservative about nudity than Europeans.  Sad, really....It's because of the overriding sense of allegiance to god and country that Americans lean towards the right, of conservativism and modesty.  Even though everyone has nipples, for example, the slightest view of them on camera or in photos is censored.  Isn't that rather ignorant?  We're taught not to be sexual beings, yet, theoretically, god invented sex so that we could "go forth and multiply".  Evidently, we're supposed to be ashamed of sex, and thus, our sensual bodies.  Again, sad...  You'd think Janet Jackson had bombed the Pentagon a few years back!

My motivation for going to Black's Beach in La Jolla, California many, many times (years ago) was to a. Get an all-over tan, b. to soak in the sun and enjoy the warmth, c. swim naked, and d. enjoy my day, read a book, spend time with friends, where no one really had to stare or gawk like they do when a person is wearing a swim suit at the beach.

I think people look their best naked and natural, rather than waistbands, and straps, and strings here and there binding into their skin, pinching and constricting.  Even overweight people look better nude rather than tucking everything they possess into a prescribed modesty in triangles of lycra.

When nearly everyone is nude, no one pays much attention to anyone else--everyone gets their 'space'.  So, I'd have to answer with another point above, e. get some peace and quiet!

Yes I have been to several.  My motivation was to just be natural in the sun.  It feels great to swim in the sea without anything on.

I also think that Americans are on the whole more modest than Europeans.  Technically, it is not illegal to be nude anywhere in Spain, for example, but people usually choose not to go round the city naked rather than it being illegal.

Here is a bit of harmless fun about "beach bums" -

Yes I've been to a private Nudest Beach in Sydney with a former boyfriend. He went nude, I kept on my bikini-bottom. Actually it was quite peaceful, not over-crowded, no families, just a few couples there and we found our own private place on the beach. We were just swimming and sunbaking, nothing more. It didn't feel kinky actually it was quite nice to swim with the feeling of no prying eyes (I've sunbaked topless at other local beaches before but felt there were some stares, so this situation felt better) there was the feeling of being free under the sun. But I doubt I'd ever go totally nude, or go to such a place without a partner. It was nice to go as a couple though.

Cap d'Agde on the French Riviera and Formentera (One of the Balearic islands) seem to be the best nude beach spots in Europe.

In early 80's I used to go to Sagres, Algarve, Portugal and Belixe beach had totally nude people but my family and I always wore our bathing suits. There were a lot of voyeurs on the top of the cliffs but people did not care much about that. The beach is too wonderful to make us bother about any of this. I do not mind having nude people around me, I bother more about voyeurs.

I've been to a nudist beach but purely accidental http://hubpages.com/hub/My-Accidental-N … Experience
I think American society is more modest, not necessarily the people, but the rather the expectations. Laws are stricter on indecent exposure etc.

Often go to nude beaches in the Caribbean and Europe, but in particular on St Martin/ St Maarten, in my opinion the best place ever for experiencing naturism.
Love going nude because you feel like one with nature, nothing better than swimming naked or feeling the sun on your entire body. Rejuvenating, freeing and soothing. There's nothing quite like it.

Europeans are more used to going topless / seeing topless women and therefore they are probably less modest than Americans.
However it's mostly Americans on the nude beaches of the Caribbean!

In any case I'd recommend it to anyone... just to try it at least once alone or with someone you are comfortable with. Doesn't have to be on a crowded beach full of naked people. the best beaches are the secluded, deserted ones (loads of those on SXM).

    Give it ago!

I had just met a wonderful young lady at the beach and we walked and talked all night long. We walked to a beautiful little beach behind this little hotel and sat in the sand watching the moon. A very overweight and quite naked man in his fifties saw up from the hotel and began chasing us as he screamed at us that we were not allowed them. So, yes, I have been to a nude beach, just didn't know it.

I have been to a nudist beach, but sought a more secluded part for privacy with my companions as I don't want the world to see me in the buff, thank you very much. I don't know if Americans are more modest. In some ways Americans are more conservative, but then there are many exceptions to everything in America. Europeans are more okay with public nudity. Anywhere close to the Med will find nudists or people letting it all hang out. Why?

Heh! I have no idea. More liberated? Just getting a tan? Showing off? Having an all-over tan is appealing and some people seem okay with it. It's just one of those things, I guess.

Very Interesting. I read all answers. I never went to such place but I still agree that there is nothing more nude than Nature. Being really close to nature is more godly act than anything. We still need to learn more to be transparent like nature.

Been to afew in the caribbean.

Quite afew resorts have a nude section for the European guest.

I went to one and this british lady came over and asking the guy I was with when was I going to take off my top. I never did.

Another time while at a resort with my son securely in the kids club. After speaking to the guard on at the nude section she pointed to a spot all the way at the end and stated no one goes that far you'll be comfortable and undisturbed.

So I grab a few drinks my sunblock, hat, book and shades and venture to find a spot. Found the perfect spot laid out my stuff got in the water for a min the went to lay off free from tan lines.
But little did I know they opened a freeway after I was settled. Yes,while tanning about 15 guys walked to where I was.Alittlw while later I put on my wrap and walked to bar to refill my drink and the guard and the bartender were laughing stating,'No one every goes that far but once you went down a train came thru. We laughed. The bartender told me to take it instride and as a compliment.

I did and went back chilled and laughed every time someone came my way.Hard to carry on a conversation with a nude stranger for me but not for Europeans they're more open.
Even met a couple and out kids later hooked up as playmate.

I have no problem going nude, wish there were more places in the states for it.

I am glad you asked this question as my my husband &  I were talking about it the other day.
We ended up on a nudist beach by accident one day much to my husbands delight!
He was in the water naked before you could blink !
    I went topless which I enjoy !
The freedom of restrictive clothing is so nice in the water. I have loved going topless swimming for years ( when private)
I woulnt go on my own however I have looked up on the net for more beaches for us to visit here in Australia together.
If you only do it where they allow you to there should be no problems.
Watch out for things that bite in the water !

Yes, and our motivation was to see all the women.  Little did we know that everyone was in the forties and fifties and sixties with no great bodies.  It was the 70's.

When I lived on the Mainland, I visited lots of hot springs establishments.  Most of them are nudist.  It took awhile for me to relax enough to remove my bathing suit, but eventually I did.

In America, people tend to think nudists are immoral regarding sex, but that's not true.  If anything, establishments like that are more respectful than most.  There's no violence there, or anything threatening.

I went because I was fascinated with natural creeks and lakes that were already hot.  If only I could have backpacked to those when I was in high school!  A nice hot soak at the end of a long day!
