I always stay at hostels. They do not have to be youth hostel.
One reason is because you get to meet people from all over the world there and make friends
Another is because the staff can usually refer you to interesting places to visit that are not tourist traps
Of course the cost is a factor as well
I am 54 and have stayed in them all over the world

It all depends really. I'm in my mid to latter twenties, so I would prefer a hotel but if you are in your earlier twenties, i'd say hostel! You'll have more fun!

Mid-twenties, and I've stayed in both.  The times that I stayed at a hostel were largely the result of finances.  I'd say that it depends upon what kind of experience you're looking for.  When traveling alone, staying at a hostel can be nice because you almost invariably meet other people.  At the same time, I really like having my own bathroom, and hostels can also be noisy (I once stayed in an 18 bed room, talk about a bad night's sleep) and security concerns are greater.  Bring a lock for your suitcase and a padlock in case they have lockers.
