We try our best to adopt the local culture, to learn what the residents like to do, and to leave our pre-conceived notions behind. We ask where they like to eat, what they like to, and try to stay off the beaten tourist path, unless there is something we really want to see (usually a historical site). You'd be amazed at what learning just a few words of the native language can do towards changing locals view and increase relations.

Firstly, try their food! I love to try different food. Then visit places were the locals go, not the tourist attractions!

I have been collecting stamps, pebbles and seashells from countries I visited as a child. Thanks to the internet, stamp posted mails are nearly becoming history. My children find it amazing and love to show it their friends. As a grown up now I make friends where ever I go so you may say I get relations....

I actually like to relax. (I agree with LaThing about the food too!) but often by wandering off of the beaten path and just experiencing life in a new place, I fell that I can get a better feeling for a place's real character.

I always like to "live" like the locals. Eat local food, use local transport, partake in local rituals. Besides sightseeing I dont attend many other touristy venues. Oh an prefferably learn some basic words, if its a foreign language.
