A country rich in culture and beauty is still trying to recover from one of the worst dark periods in history (1975-1979) in which the country was known as the "killing fields". Over 1.4 million innocent men, women and children were slaughtered by the Khmer Rouge in Pol Pot's attempt to cleanse Cambodia. The inhumanity of this regime is similar to the Hitler regime in Germany. One only needs to visit the Cambodian Holocaust Museum to see the crimes against humanity suffered by millions at the hands of the Khmer Rouge.
Although you can visit year round, the ideal months are December and January. April tends to get very hot (around 40°C/100°F.)
As in other countries, it is considered disrespectful to wear shorts when entering temples such as Angkor Wat.
Cambodia is a fascinating country, but one thing to keep in mind for anyone considering wandering off the beaten track is that there are an estimated 4 million unexploded landmines planted throughout the country by the Khmer Rouge. Keep to well-travelled routes and areas that are known to be safe.
