    In 1796 the great French mathematician, Laplace, put forward a theory that the sun and all the planets were formed out of a gigantic glowing mass of gas-like matter. As it cooled, this threw off whirling rings, each of which solidified into a planet. The central mass became the sun . A more recent theory pictures a similar mass, from which portions forming the earth and other planets were torn off from time to time by the attraction of passing stars. While the planets were solidifying they drew to themselves small bodies of matter flying through space, and for a while increased their size. The sun is what was left after the planets had been detached.

    No. The Earth formed from the same interstellar cloud, but it has remained millions of miles from the center of this system since its birth, though that distance may have changed from a number of factors over time.

    The distance may have increased a few million miles because of the transfer of rotational motion to orbital motion as the sun's gravity slowed Earth's rotation. This has happened to the Moon, pushing it farther from Earth.
