   I ran a day care for 11 years from my home. In my opinion the most important thing is that you treat every child as an individual and ensure that each childs needs are met. Ensure that you are meeting all of the standards set out by local government. I also think that it is vital to keep up to date with changing legislation and ensure that you attend all the relevant training e.g. First Aid Courses (ensure that you keep your certificate up to date), Child Protection, Childrens education and child development courses. In UK, day care is inspected at least once a year to ensure that the children are following a curriculum and that all standards, legislation, and safety measures are being covered.    Wow you're good!!! I couldn't agree with you more.  It is funny you should say that about treating each child as an individual and ensuring their needs are met because that is one of my biggest things.  I have four of my own children and during my day care hours my children don't get or expect to get special treatment.  That is something else I hold onto as very important, any one who runs daycare who have their own children shouldn't ever treat their kids better than the children they keep.  i know of some people who run in home daycare who are mothers and they treat their own kids better than the ones they are providing daycare to.(example: she will allow her kids to eat mcdonald's for lunch while the other kids have to each what she fixes)
   I also keep up to date on state laws, cpr certification etc. these are also very important when running an in home daycare.  I am not licensed as it is not a requirement however even being not licensed we are still required to follow laws set for those who do not get licensed, and I make sure I do just that, in fact CPR certification is not one however being a mother, I wouldn't feel right not being CPR certified while taking care of other peoples children so I do go above and beyond.

   I absolutely agree with the answers above.  Looking at it from a business standpoint, if you have the resources and ability - become a licensed childcare provider in your home.  You can find information on your state website on how to become licensed.  Depending on the number of kids in your care, licensing is not necessary - but prospective clients are going to consider your services before they would someone who is unlicensed.  It gives them a certain peace of mind knowing that you are licensed, insured and following all statutes set forth by the state regarding childcare provision.

   I agree with the two answers above and would add that one of the most important things when running a daycare is to be a partner with the children's parents.  It's very important to look at them as their child's first teacher but to also consider yourself a teacher as well.  That child spends a lot of time with you and will learn many things from you.  So while it is your business you are also making a difference in the life of every child you care for.
