I just came across a website called bestofhubpages.com,  with many of our hubs, indexed among adult ads with full nudity. A lot of the tags are of a VERY adult nature. Anybody know about this?

OK, I went on a search and all that pulled up was bestofhubpages.blogspot.com and YES, it has been removed and the address no longer allowed ever again.  Must have been one raunchy site.  I find those kinds from time to time when taking the Blogger tour from my blogs to see what others are doing.  You can run across some real garbage.  Oh, well, looks like the situation was dealt with so all is well again in Hubville.

        @Denny Lyon:

        The site is still there.
As previously discussed, remove "of" from bestofhubpages.com and try again.

        Cheers,
        Eric G.

That is a very valid question as this is something HubPages should look at directly as all of our hubs are planted on their, from religion to arts it is a mockery of our content but I hope that it will be handled. It appears as that company grabbed all of the content for traffic. I just honestly did not want my articles to be on a porno site.sad

We actually have no control on whoever is linking to us, we only can control links in our own webpages that have adsense ads. I think that is what adsense TOS says, no adult/mature content and no linking to such sites. Anybody has a different opinion?

    Hi RMR,

Tried to find the owner, and registry enquiries show that bestofhubpages.com has never been registered.

Site does not come up on the net either.

Where exactly were you guys looking?

    Cheers,
    Eric G.

I hate to give them publicity, but here's the link.  I had to hunt to find it.

** I removed the http but it still showed as a link, so I'm just taking it out altogether **

I'll delete this after you've picked it up.

Hi Shirley, just edit your post to remove the http and the www and it should not be identified as a link.
        like this - besthubpages.com

People can then type, or past it into their browser.
        cheers, Eric G.

That's too bad. Someone took a good idea for a site and turned it into a toilet. I don't get the porn and Hubpages connection. I can't see them converting any sales to their offerings with the kind of traffic they must be getting.

    1. Sterling Sage profile image59
Sterling Sageposted 15 years agoin reply to this

I don't think pornography is a bad thing, by nature.  There's nothing wrong with watching people have sex.  It's been done since the dawn of the species.

IThat said, I will say that what that site is doing is really sleazy.  They're clearly misleading people in order to get traffic.  I think even their paying customers will find some of their tactics annoying, to say the least.  I mean, come on.  Animated pictures of naked "real people" who just happen to live in whatever city you're in?  Give me a break.

I don't get the Porn/HubPages connection either, but they'll still make some money.  Porn-viewers aren't interested in only porn.  I know; I'm one of them.  tongue

It's a shame that they may affect HubPages' reputation.  I also don't think they're breaking any law by doing so, though.

      1. Marian Swift profile image61
Marian Swiftposted 15 years agoin reply to this

Yup, it's sleazy.  Worse, it can undermine a Hubber's efforts to build a professional reputation as a freelance writer.

It looks like they're backlinking the Hubs, not stealing them outright.  I don't know if any of my Hubs are on there ... couldn't force myself to work through all that trash to find out.

Not surprisingly, the owner of the domain is hidden via a privacyt services.

But the website is hosted with Hostgator.
    Here's their TOS.
    http://www.hostgator.com/tos.shtml

It does not specifically prevent adult content, but they will shut down sites determined to be obscene.
They will also respond to copyright complaints, so perhjaps Hub Pages staff can address this as a blatant case of stolen content.

Anyway, an email to abuse@hostgator.com wouldn't go astray.
Just describe the problem, and give the domain name, and say that it is hosted on their servers.

Of course, if Hostgator shuts them down, they can be up and running on another host very quickly.

The only way that this could be prevented is for HubPAges to identify sites making requests to slurp huge amounts of hub pages indexing data, and refuse to provide it.
I've flagged this post, and asked HP staff to look at this problem.

Don't you just love the internet!

    Cheers,
    Eric G.

So what if you don't like it - you don't have to go there - this is what the internet is built on: free speech - they've sent me  traffic too so I don't care they can link to all my hubs as far as I care. They give me a backlink and traffic. They are not stealing anything: they are just linking to hubs: they aren't even using an excerpt - which would be fair use.

You can't stop  people linking to your work on the internet - and a backlink from anywhere - and believe me this one is pretty soft porn - Google knows this and a link to your hub on other page will never hurt you otherwise anyone could take down their competitors just by linking to them from bad neighbourhoods.

OK. Great. If it brings traffic, I also be happy. But I fear, whether AdSense account will be blocked or not. Yet, I think as you are using AdSense longer, you know better and you have enough experience about AdSense terms and conditions. Thanks for your information.  smile

They're not directly stealing your content. The script they are using appears to take a snippet and provide a link back to your hub. These low quality backlinks will not affect your Google Adsense earnings. If anything, it's Hubpages problem to get them shut down. If someone was using my business name and linking to porn, I'd be pretty upset. I hope they get legal on it.

First off, I can't stand the sites that use porn in any way.  So right there is one thing I have against this.

Amazing enough I was not worried about my adsense earnings as I know that has nothing to do with me.  What I more worried about is that I could get flagged for duplicate content because of this.

Maybe just maybe that has been some of the previous hubbers issues with duplicate content and nobody was aware of this until now.

Many of mine are there as backlinks.  I've actually gotten some traffic from there.  I don't like that they're using the "HubPages" though, especially since they are obviously not connected with this in any way.

I noticed the site before because I found the link in my trafic sources. You can find all your hubs there by searching on author.
I don't like the first page with all the nudity by the way and I don't know if  the hubpageteam knows about it.

The advertising on that site is cheesy and overdone.  Even someone looking for "that sort of thing" would probably be overwhelmed by all the videos.  In their wildest dreams would a whole bunch of women be fawning over them.  Just to look at the humorous side of it LOL.

That site is running nothing but adult ads, NOT AdSense, so nothing that is happening there is in violation of Google's TOS.

You see what they're doing right?  If you look v e r y closely at the links, then you'll notice that they all have the same unique tracking word which is 'token'.  SO what they're doing is referring everybody's hubs here and likely earning a FAT Google Adsense check as a result of sharing in the referral impressions here...very clever to say the least.  I'll bet that site owner isn't even an active writer here -- but earning good pay from just referring our hub creations.  Guess if would be possible to track who this person is based of their unique tracking word 'token'.  I'd be curious to know who it is and sure you all would too!

That's not the same site I saw last week. If you Google the domain, they've placed a notation next to the domain title that says "Pornography" although I didn't notice any on the site-ads or otherwise. I'm running HP links on my site with a tracker to earn FAT Google checks, as well. That's why HP offers it. Income and backlinks.

Oh yeah no doubt I use trackers and refer people to HP to.  But I'm  just saying that this person is probably not even an active writer in the community at all.  That kinda makes for a different perspective in my opinion but Hey I guess it''s fair game!

Cannot believe this. I went to besthubpages and found MY HUB about my daughter. When I clicked on it, it didn't link to Hubpages. Unbelievable NO WAIT, believable. Once you post on the web your in public domain. It does stifle a writer & that is really what we don't need.

Actually, anything you write on the Internet is still considered your intellectual property.  By publishing it, you have copyrights to it, and you can fight for your rights if someone else has republished your work.

The first thing to do is contact the server host where your page was copied.  Not the person who copied and republished it, but the company in charge of the site they republished it on.  Explain to them what happened, with the date you published your writing and a link to the original plus a link to the copy.  They often will take care of the problem from there.

If that doesn't work, do a search on internet plagiarism and I'm sure you can find other resources.

  23. Julie-Ann Amos profile image62

I actually put a copyright capsule on ALL my hubs.  I have't seen anyone else do this (and they may well do, but it's not something I've noticed, although I've advocated it in several threads.

One thing I do notice that for all the constant threads on plagairism there are NO versions of my hubs out there at present.  None.

Now, either this means my hubs are all so lousy nobody wants to copy them (not even the one that's twice on page 1 google) - or the copyright statement works.  Just thought I'd throw that out there.

  24. anne.moss profile image60

It's an interesting concept they have there, regardless of the porn. Just creating a directory, probably using rss feeds, and making money from the referrals. I would think hubpages would at the very least close their account here - as a measure against them using the hubpages name in the domain name?
