Advertisers bidding less in September?

My traffic is higher than it has ever been (Five Figures), however, my CPM is very low this month. I feel like some of this traffic is going to waste this month. My CPM has been normal since I started using the HP Ad Program in March 2011, but September is not consistent with previous month's CPMs.

For anyone new here who does not know what CPM is - it's how much you earn every 1000 views basically.

Do advertisers bid less in September to prepare for the final quarter of the year or something? (Just an assumption.) cool

I think you are might be right because I'm averaging between 30-40 clicks from Hubpages a day whereas I get between 5-10 from one site which earns the same as the Hubpages clicks together.

I've started on HubPages only last month so have no refrence to judge earnings by. Not feeling very great to learn that earnings or CPMs have dropped this month.

Cheer up, on my other new account, I only had a couple of hubs up and so could see what was paying what with HPads.
This month, September, that account had a CPM of $28 most days. I got paid if even one visitor looked at those hubs! But although I now know the topic that brings in the cash, it is one that is exceptionally boring to me and I'd be hard pushed to write more round it.
        And no I'm not telling!

Is it just Hubpages cpm that has fallen (has CPM on any other Adsense site you use dropped?)

It may be because the best paying adverts are served to the best quality sites, in short. So if the subdomain change made Google adsense think less of some pages which previously had the HP authority behind them, that could be related.

Then again, are you sure it's the amount you are being PAID per click? It could just be that you're getting LESS clicks per thousand, not actually lower value clicks.

      Just HubPages CPM

Ooops misread. Thought you meant Adsense.

I've heard reports of people having HP ads CPM as low as .25

Whoa, mine is not that low, but in comparison to previous month's data, it is.

My CPM has fallen steadily since March 2011. I was getting about $7.10 CPM in March and now it's about half that. So despite my traffic recovering and then moving ahead, I'm not really making much more than I was post Panda. I think some of the good advertisers have left and haven't returned - maybe they think the hubpages recovery is just a fluke and they are waiting to see what happens.

But you are not the only one disappointed with CPM.

I was thinking the same thing about CPM, SR!  Maybe some of the advertisers didn't get the response they hoped for via HP?

CPM makes a big difference.  My (modest amount of) traffic has increased to 6 or 7 times the size, but the earnings are only 4 times as much because of the low CPM.

I did also wonder if HP only made a certain amount of money from advertising and so earnings don't increase much, even if the site's traffic goes up?

      Just speculating.

I think the good advertisers departed in July, when they thought the site would never recover no matter what HP did.

They haven't come back - perhaps they are waiting to see how things pan out. According to all the quantcast graphs, the recovery is only about three weeks old.

Hopefully they'll come back once it is clear that it is sustained

I hope my CPM returns to it's original levels, because right now, I am below average. My traffic is wonderful, but CPM has a large impact on earnings.

Even a 50 cent increase on a monthly average makes a huge difference in earnings.

The Quantcast data suggests that the recovery has stopped and plateaued, doesn't it?

              Thanks! :-)

I wonder if people will read my hub about Panda? I fear I may be saying things no one wants to hear, but I badly wanted to get it off my chest! Well, it's out there now!

Of course, Sod's Law, as soon as moaned about my cpm being $3.50, it went up to $5.50 the next day! lol

I read it and have been trying to incorporate more outgoing links in my hubs.

Do you think that dropping the news capsule was maybe a bad idea by Hubpages?

I used to always have a news capsule in informational hubs which of course increased outgoing links as well as gave further information to the reader.

Now of course, they are gone, and many of those hubs are left without the outgoing links they had before.

The problem with the news capsule (and other RSS stuff) was that the snippet quoted created a duplicate problem.

You kind of want to link out within the text of your own articles, which of course are unique.

Is it true that advertisers bid more during holidays? I was quite the beginner on HubPages last year, but this year may be really good for me, according to my current traffic trends anyway...

I switched off my HpAds last Sunday to see if I could increase my earnings. My views had gone up to my highest ever, but the earnings were a nightmare!!!
I turned off the HPAds and this past week only had the Adsense Ads and have made as much in one week as I did in 18 days with HPAds on.
I see the issue with my hubs though as being the "type of Ads" placed on my hubs from HPAds. I appear to get more relevant Ads to the money making hubs from Adsense than through the HPAds.

do you think Google is limiting their high paying ads when HP ads are on?

        Good question.

On the contrary, the idea is that HPads and adsense "bid" against each other; the higher earning ad gets the spot.  When I see $.03 google ads left (there will always be at least one) it says something about what google is paying.

Nevertheless, it doesn't work the same for all hubbers; as Michael says above what works best for individuals varies.  You might find as well that it varies for your own hubs by the month, week, or whatever.  What ads are used depends on what is being offered by advertisers.

Both my CPM and eCPM are very very low. Like if they go any lower they will be in negative figures!

I think it is because the hubs I have that still get traffic are not advertiser friendly.

When I had a traffic spike at the start of this month, my earnings and cpm shot up for both adsense and Hubads, as many of my older hubs started gaining traffic again. Many of them have higher paying keywords.

Now I am earning about the same as I did in summer 2010 when I had less than a fifth of the hubs I had now and only a fraction of the traffic I'm now seeing (even though I am still in the plunge, I didn't go right down to zero).
