Despite 14 Straight Months Of Public Job Loss, Republicans Continue To Block Obama’s Jobs Plan
By Tanya Somanader on Oct 7, 2011 at 2:20 pm
"President Obama’s American Jobs Act would not only add 1.9 million jobs next year, but makes targeted investments to arrest the trend in layoffs. The plan includes $35 billion in direct state aid infusion that will “prevent up to 280,000 layoffs of teachers, who are — along with cops and firefighters — particularly vulnerable to local government budget shortfalls.”
However, Republicans continue to block Obama’s much-needed plan because, in part, they see public job loss as a positive. As Yglesias points out, “this shrinkage is exactly what conservatives claim to believe will spark growth once they bring the era of Kenyan Anticolonialism to an end.” Buying into the conservative campaign against government workers, Republicans governors like Chris Christie (NJ) and Rick Scott (FL) openly tout laying off thousands of workers as a badge of honor. Scott actually bragged about getting rid of 15,000 jobs in his state. In talking up his draconian budget cuts, Scott admitted that his “biggest cut” is “always people.”

Ahhh, "the people". Those dam things. If ONLY they didn't exist, the OverLords could soar!!!
....what to do...what to do....gotta get rid of "the people".
What was it they were called in the 70's?? Oh yes, Useless Eaters.
They're still here? Fiddlesticks. MUST be a way to get them out!
........bwahahahahaha *rubs hands*.....bwaahahahaha

This all sounds a bit too logical to me, I mean, it might actually save jobs and protect people from unemployment and poverty.... Where's that birth certificate again........
Ahaha!
Wait...they'll come up with a doozy....not that being gay and having wild cocaine-induced sex, then killing your lover, whom you met in church, was anything to laugh at...
But being born in Kenya, and groomed for the presidency by the Illuminati...and working for the CIA and/or the British MI-6 or 5? is more believable to me.
All I know is, he has good, common sense ideas, and is turned into a crazed socialist by these azzhat money-grubs.
just think....they don't CARE if people fall down a deep hole.
As long as Obama fails. What is that?
Certainly not patriotism.
No, it's not patriotism............smell a little desperation though, don't you?
S*** is he still here? Doesn't he know an intern somewhere? What about wifey, no lesbian rendezvous? ..................... He's a kenyan, sent by the communists to destroy America ? yeah, that's it.
well, wifey's a you know......(welfare-type)...you know, Moochelle....
and of course, she plants a garden so you know she's hippy-dippy. But Tammy Bruce said she was garbage...so maybe that has to do with composting!
Oh whatever it is......they will spin it out there with some big-wig GOP entertainer....Trump, Boortz, or even the politicians....blurred lines there.
Meanwhile, Romney has Kofer Black and Michael Hayden as advisors....
Enhanced techniques/torture, and Blackwater (Black)
and Total Information and Awareness Network, spying on Americans.(Hayden)
Uh Oh...he's going after Iran!!!! WHO by chance, does he work for?
Oh Mitt...Mitt Mitt Mitt. Gloves over an Iron Hand.
THEY are desperate. My Gut 2012, they've created more "welfare types" (disgusting phrase I know) than is good for them politically. The left will not see the rain in 2012, they'll see the ballot box. And vote, I believe they did this once before, 08, didn't deliver a massive majority though did it
Did I see the words "birth certificate" refering to Obama up there? For the 121,323,573,859th time. He is a proven American citizen and this needs to be a dead issue!
My sentiments exactly. I'm afraid I couldn't resist a little sarcasm with reference to the birth certificate issue.
The Owners of the Republican party do not want congress to create jobs. It would help Obama. Eric Cantor has called the protesters on Wall Street a mob because his owners don't like them in front of their business.
Just ridiculous that they can't see past helping Obama. Goes to prove how little they care about US citizens.
I don't have any confidence in the slimy bag of puss some call congress to get out of our way. They are well paid for by their oligarchic handlers and have even stated as much. Mitch O'Connell has openly stated that he will do nothing but work for the ouster of Obama by the next election. This is from one of the republican leadership.
Publicly funded campaigns, term limits, lobbying reform and restricting or eliminating the fed will be the only solution to these problems. Unfortunately this is like a stake in the heart to the criminals that occupy the halls of congress and make no mistake they are in charge.
Government is incapable of creating jobs. Everything they touch has the opposite effect. For example, a study showed that 80% of people land a job within forty days from when their unemployment checks stop. If we stop paying people to not work they would choose to take jobs at wages the market will bear. The unemployment situation would be much improved and so would the economy.
Hi there, Artcivacomp. Welcome to hubpages.
Thanks for your very interesting post. I would love to read the study showing 80% of unemployment benefit recipients land a job when their checks stop. Please share a link with us.
I suspect there may be a flaw in your conclusion that stopping checks will lead to people taking jobs at wages the market will bear.
According to figures published 10/7/2011 by TradingEconomics.com and the US Bureau of Labor Statistics, “U.S. Nonfarm payroll employment edged up by 103,000 in September, and the unemployment rate held at 9.1 percent, the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics reported on October 7.
The increase in employment partially reflected the return to payrolls of about 45,000 telecommunications workers who had been on strike in August. In September, job gains occurred in professional and business services, health care, and construction. Government employment continued to trend down.
The number of unemployed persons, at 14.0 million, was essentially unchanged in September, and the unemployment rate was 9.1 percent. Since April, the rate has held in a narrow range from 9.0 to 9.2 percent.” (1)
Now let us do the September arithmetic together. Only 68,000 new jobs were created in September (after subtracting 45,000 strikers returning to work) for the 14 Million collecting benefits. At this rate, it will take 17 years to create enough jobs for everyone collecting checks. It appears that your solution does not take into account that the required job openings just don’t exist!
Unemployment compensation doesn’t pay people for not working. It pays people to prevent riots and anarchy because they can’t feed their families or pay their rent.
Again, artcivacomp, welcome to hubpages and thanks for your comments. I am looking forward to seeing your link and learning from the survey you mentioned.

You are confused, it isn't an actual jobs plan its campaign rhetoric. He has done everything possible to slow the growth of our economy and has been successful, its his only success and something he would love to change he just doesn't have the skills necessary to accomplish it.
"He has done everything possible to slow the growth of our economy and has been successful, its his only success and something he would love to change he just doesn't have the skills necessary to accomplish it."
Like what for example? Preventing the demise of the U.S. auto industry? Extending the Bush tax cuts? Providing extended unemployment benefits? Anything else come to your mind?
Well my husbands unemployed wasn't extended ?..so despite what Congress or the media say I know it wasnt, nor is it a reality for many Americans!
Oh they offer foodstamps insead (which is nice if you wanna live in a empty corn-flakes box)..geeze
As long as there are Republicans in positions of leadership...you will not get any help from them.
And I would like to know just what people are supposed to do?
Become homeless....really? Because people like Russsshhhhhh can't "make do" on 57 million???
Give me a break.
Tax the rich
Feed the poor
Til there are no
Rich no more.
My understanding is that extended unemployment benefits were provided only in states like Michigan where unemployment was very high. Perhaps unemployment wasn't high enough in your state to qualify for federal extended benefits. It has been a lifesaver for plenty of people in Michigan.
You would say that, because you, repairguy47, have in fact seen the jobs bill, and this is why you're able to point out that this is all rhetoric.(I know you must have evidence to support your view, other than fox news footage) Interesting point re slow the growth of our economy, your economy is in fact growing, slowly, but growing. The British coalition on the other hand, have adopted the same draconian measures that you appear to support, correct me if I'm wrong, but Keynesian economics is not your bag? Failing miserably, economy slowing, desperate situation. Is this where you would like to take your country?
I'm able to point out its campaign rhetoric simply because its Obama presenting it. Any other questions?
I'm able to point out its campaign rhetoric simply because its Obama presenting it.
You may need to present something ever so slightly more substantial than that, if you want to be taken seriously.
No other questions. You've said it all.
Yes indeed, all you've come up with is empty rhetoric!
I'm ok with you not taking me serious, you don't mean anything to me.
I'm able to point out its campaign rhetoric simply because its Obama presenting it. Any other questions?
Actually, I was answering you. No other questions, and despite what you might think, I do take you seriously, if I didn't I wouldn't bother to answer you. Unless of course you mean you've said it all. That's fine, I don't mean anything to you, didn't honestly think I did. Was simply responding to your post. Calm down man, if you post, you may get a response, not personal. You know what they say about kitchens and heat.
OMG! Shocking!!
Obama is not only campaigning, but is employing classic GOP tactics!!!
Oh no....Romney's advisors, 6 of them are PNAC.
Holy hell.....it's Neo-Con III
War with Iran, one of PNAC's goals......
nononononononononononononononononononooooooo
We cannot go back to Bush!!
"Presidential contender Mitt Romney has laid out his vision for a foreign policy in a Romney administration – and it looks like it could have been dreamt up by the same neocons who guided George W. Bush’s disastrous pursuit of permanent U.S. military dominance."

Maybe President Obama's , 50 million dollar arms sale to Baihran this week will create a few jobs ......what!/ did I really say that !
You have a problem with Saudi Arabia?
Since when?
Arch Christo-CON Erik Prince LOVES it....protects him from prosecution of his disgusting crimes.
Actually I do , I don't believe America has much in the way of friends at all in the Mid East. Isreal included. Nation building be damned.
SINCE WHEN?
But glad to hear you say that!!!
Jobs Bill, Hmmmmm. Never before in American history has the unemployed been treat better than today . Three years of unemployment benifits....Unlimited credit for further education loans .....retraining programs for out- of work career jobless ......, as to the layoffs of teachers and public employees- why shouldn't they be treated the same as everyone else?
"Never before in American history has the unemployed been treat better than today"
Nobody wants to be unemployed.....don't you get that?
The jobs went away, and the "job creators" are sitting on their money......
How it that good treatment? It sux!
The unemployed were treated better when they had jobs.
"Red white and stupid " Heres the problem ! It is the 'stupid' part that is destroying the red white and blue! From the inside as usual , all great nations fall eventually. And Pres. Obama , Bush or Kennedy , it doesnt matter who leads us down the pipe , its the common mentality of entitlements that is driving our faces into the dirt. So ,as liberals want lets "tax the rich " and hell ,lets double tax the rich and then sit back and watch as the problems just disolve in front of our eye's! Right. Ten times taxing the rich isn't going to fix the problem. Deficit borrowing , spending and the high speed stupidity of of our "leaders" is not going to change anytime soon.
So you are saying don't have the people with the money pay a little more. It is better to take the money from those who don't have much to begin with. That is probaby why the richest 400 people have more than the bottom 150,000,000 Americans combined.
Gnelson , Yes go for it ! Tax the rich , that will save us all from the errant spending of tax dollars. Local state or feds are so out of control with our money anyway ....What exactly will it accomplish? More revenue means more spending , period. Nothing less. Listen ,rich people spend more than the poor , they pump more dollars into regional economies than anyone does. Flat tax for all... , equal percentages , eliminate tax loop holes sure. A socialist will always have his hand in someone elses pockets. Why in the world do we need to take MORE money from anyone?
Well, now--there's no money for Americans, huh?
"I am not exactly breaking news when I write of this obscene injustice and point out that it exists because our elected officials put filling their campaign coffers over virtually everything else. Nonetheless, we should note their shameful behavior.

…There is only one foreign aid program that is not on the chopping block — not Obama’s, and not House Republicans or Senate Democrats. And it happens to be the largest single foreign assistance program of them all: $3.5 billion in aid to Israel…
… there is hardly another program in the entire U.S. budget that is deemed off-limits for budget cutters. Not aid to pregnant women and children here at home, not assistance to the unemployed, not clean air and water programs, not Social Security and Medicare, not cancer research… Everything is up for cuts either by the cut-and-slash super committee or through “sequestration”…
it does not matter who or what does the cutting: Aid to Israel is always exempt. And that is because preserving that particular aid package is AIPAC’s top priority. Anyone suggesting cutting aid to Israel by even a dollar will be punished by AIPAC-directed donors."
WELL?
Yes all , lets sit on our a$$'s and blame everyone else , send me my handicap sign to hang on my mirror. My dissability check to live on ,food stamps because , well just because. I shouldn't have to pay my student loans, my creditcard- mortgage,Does anyone remember the sixties , the seventies when no one expected everyone else to "save them". Please! I'm 58 years old , laid off in the past 10 years 3 times. And I started my own business. If it should ever fail , its my fault ,not yours. Greed ......America is sick -but it isn't because there isn't a jobs bill it's because there is a mentality of 'I want more from you". I have reached a point where I greatly dislike the inaction of our congress and senate and white house, but I dislike Americans themselves more for our 'gimme' mentality.
The people I know work two jobs if necessary. They cut lawns or deliver pizza and go back to school to learn new skills. They go to the library to search the internet for jobs. Some have started businesses or work from home. I don’t know anyone who doesn’t want to work. Some are out of work for a while and collect unemployment but they want to work.
The rest of us are not to blame for the greed on Wall Street and in Corporate Boardrooms but it does appear that we will have to pay for it. I am not embarrassed by the working guy who can’t find a job. I am embarrassed by the politicians we send to Washington and CEO’s who make millions laying off Americans and hiring foreign workers.
But hang about, earlier on you were blaming the unemployed for being unemployed!
Try being consistent.
Yes, I remember the 60s and 70s. We had virtually full employment.
It's typical of the corporate mindset to blame the victim for the crime.
How can it be Republicans blocking the plan when it was Senate Democrats who blocked a vote on the measure?
Because we all know Repubs are blocking anything Obama does. Blue-Dogs who block him are no better!
But Senate Dems have to deal with the politics. If you remember, Pelosi's House sent numerous bills over there, and all of them were Koch-Blocked.
Doesn't matter...anyone who stands in the way of regular working Americans will no longer be tolerated.
The 1% have had their time, while the rest of us were pushed around and silenced. Now it's over. Way too many have suffered for it.
And we will suffer no more while they Luxuriate in the Lap of Luxury with stolen money.
But you're strictly addressing the Republican block. The Democrats also blocked his Jobs Bill.
2 of them.
Whitehorse Nelson, who used to be a Republican, and another Dem from a Red State.
As Big Ed says, They are not Democrats, and Reid should kick them out of the party!
I have a feeling that some of these who change parties do it just for this reason: so they can get elected, but still be the R's or Dems they always were.
Nelson
Lieberman
That broad from Louisiana come to mind.
Only one I saw genuinely change policies along with party was the one from Rhode Island..he actually changed the way he voted, not just the party affiliation.
Whitehorse has always sides with the R's...don't know why he calls himself a dem. Unless it's to get elected. Or be a thorn in the side.
Too many from, well you Guess which party, have blood in their eyes when it comes to making Obama fail so the Greedy can succeed. But, have you noticed the Republicans don't even like their own candidates? I love that aspect of that stupid party. I think they have become like rabid dogs. I do believe rabid animals are usually well, you know. The rabid animal is usually beyond saving.
Rabid is the perfect description.
Crazed, running in all directions and foaming at the mouth.
Oh yes, and lethal.
Psychiatrists agree: Republicans are insane
"A clinical case could be made that the vast majority of Republicans on Capitol Hill should be in a rubber room. Because although we have tried massive tax cuts for the wealthy not once but twice and the result has been to make the rich richer and the poor poorer, Republicans are still convinced that all we need are yet more tax cuts affecting primarily the wealthy to change the situation around. In short, they are insane.
Republicans are insane on so many levels it is hard to know where to begin. Most of them deny that climate change is happening and many of them also want to abolish the EPA. This could revert the United States back to the 1960s when we had no environmental laws and polluters could pollute without restraint. They want to reduce fuel efficiency standards for cars. They actually think we can solve our dependence on foreign oil by drilling off our coastlines. The effect will of course make us more dependent on foreign oil, which will come principally from overseas and at higher and higher prices by not weaning ourselves off oil. It is just insane!
Perhaps most insane of all is that Republicans have this dichotomy about wanting to take a meat cleaver to reduce the size of government then, when asked, find it hard to find something to cut."
http://www.occams-razor.info/2010/02/ps … nsane.html
I cant completely agree with Obamas job plan but it is certainly better then doing nothing at all. The Republicans are still playing games and just do not get it. They will block anything that does not favor big business and corporate advantages.
The Dems have some decent ideas but could do better also. Seems as if the president almost set up the jobs bill to fail on purpose to use as leverage in the new campaign. Either way he is already out running around trying to raise big money from corporations and any millionaire or billionaire who will back him. Of course this always comes at the price of doing what the donators ask of you.....more bought politicians, it just never ends, I hope that the 99% group can somehow pull off a miracle and wake up these idiots.
Wish these jerks would actually spend a little time doing their over payed jobs versus always trying to work on the next position they could get. In the case of the pres. just do your dang job and getting re-elected will take care of itself.
Yes, well his job depends on other branches of gvt. If one of them is a dead duck, what would you have him do?
Sorry--but these clowns on the right are Derelict in their Duty. Obstructing and being nasty morons is not worth $176,000 a year.
