Recently a student drew a picture of people and at the end was a hetero family- husband.wife,child.
The child was told the art must be redrawn as it was offensive. Do you agree and why?
Here is a video showing the artwork:

It's certainly ridiculous if it is true but there does not seem to be any link material or evidence to prove it occurred, not yet anyway.

It appears that reason prevailed in the end. The child was allowed to complete the mural as she originally intended. This strikes me as an unusual incident, much less common than incidents where social conservatives object to school topics related to gay rights or homosexuality or even comprehensive sex education.

And just in case you don't like that it came from The Blaze:

The video appears to be glossing over with great effort the fact that this was a MURAL design that got turned down, not the kids art work.

To suggest that the kid was told that his individual drawing had to be redone is not what appears to have actually happened at all. It was a mural design. The teachers or administrators didn't want to "offend" anyone with a publicly displayed and permanent mural painted somewhere that depicted only a traditional family given the massive percentage of single-family homes out there (and not to mention the gay marriage issue being so easy to use as a way to piss people off, which is what this guy is really doing in the video, just trying to do it in a backhanded way). The drawing wasn't offensive. They didn't want a mural that might offend. Big difference, but subtle, and the guy in this video works very hard to conceal that difference from you.

He's either just not very smart and missed the point, or he's very clever and is using this to subtly fuel the gay-hater fires because he knows that the gay haters will blindly turn this into "evidence" that "traditional values" and certain Christian agendas are "under attack."

I could be wrong, but that's my take. He flagrantly twists the mural concept being rejected for its potential to offend someone into being the same thing as the child's art was deemed offensive. Nobody really said that kid's art was offensive, I bet. Everyone was fine with the kid's art, the actual picture he drew. The politics kicked in when it came time to paint a public mural, and, for anyone thinking rationally and understanding how incendiary "family makeup" is these days, it doesn't take much brains to see how a design more inclusive and representative of the actual student body would be requested by administrators who just don't want angry calls... from ANYONE. It's the fear of offending SOMEONE with the mural, not a drawing on paper that is "offensive." This video is an example of either plain stupidity or willful manipulation. I'm betting the second one.

Yeah, and those articles (at least the second one, the first one tried to jam up my machine with a cookie and stuff), support exactly what I said, not what that guy in the video is trying to sell with his over-emotive diatribe steeped in agenda and sophistry.

All that really happened was that the child or children drew the picture that was selected and then deselected because it wasn't politically correct. Let's make sure we punish kids who aren't politically correct even though they were only acting out of their own experience.

Well, political correctness is over-rated anyway. It started out as a good idea but became the fortress of the weak and the facilitator of denial. It's foolish to think that just because we don't hear anything offensive anymore that problems are solved.

From a human standpoint, the best thing about a rattlesnake is the noise it makes. I don't know about you, but if there's something that can poison me nearby, I'd rather know where it is in advance.

Obviously political correctness demands that he be depicted in a bisexual interracial polygamous relationship that doesn't involve any legal marriage, and one of his spouses should be significantly older or younger than him, just to cover all the bases. Maybe he should be transgendered too.

Or maybe people should just accept that a mural meant to depict the fictional life one person can't possibly represent all demographics.

How would a child that age be expected to draw a family other than what he knows? If people are offended by the image of a family with a male father and a female mother then they have too much time on their hands.

Red Herring. Picking bits an pices of made up outrage to smear liberals...as usual. Consider the source.

I can quite imagine the outrage had it been 2 mommies or 2 daddies. Of course, THEN it would have been justified fake outrage huh?

Fehhhhh. I don't buy it. Beckles smear campaign. Trying to act like his favored ones are the poor victims...as he always does.

Poor Beck and his poor deprived and put upon white people and "regular" family with 2.4 kids.

Oh, the pain of discrimination....when we have to have Christmas, and Easter, and Sundays off.....and read books about mommy washes the dishes while daddy goes to work.

oh gosh...the poor "regular" people are so maligned. And who better to cry for them than Beckles? The king of tears!

So you think the implicit requirement that this kid redraws the family in the mural as a same-sex couple is perfectly reasonable?

Between the OP and now the link has been removed, hijacked, or otherwise.
I got an error message that included the statement "a team of trained monkeys has been dispatched to deal with this situation."
    It's quite comical, actually.

But answering the general question raised by the OP, "What type of artwork by a child student should be censored?" I would respond artwork that depicts violent or sexual material that is above the child's pay grade.

Yeah, definitely not the case here. This is about a picture of a heterosexual nuclear family being painted (no pun intended) as the fanged red-eyed face of hate.

The only time when a case like that MIGHT have some validity would be IF the school was PREDOMINANTLY gay.

  8. lovemychris profile image76
    lovemychrisposted 12 years ago

I understand fine. "traditional" families make up 12% of us now. Their reign is over. They are now in the position of other minorities throughout America...
Only difference is...they still think they are entitled to all the consideration.
It's quite amazing. When I was growing up--all we learned about was "traditional" families, "traditional" history....but even still! I remember being in in 5th grade, after we learned about the Native Americans and the slaves...even then I thought: there is something wrong with white people.

The whole problem with people like Santorum, Romney, et al, is that they think we are with them, that the world will go back to that 50's era, even when their world is no more.

Everyone has the right to thrive! That's what they need to learn, not keep insisting that we stay in the past.

And as for media....I have been on to that right-wing cabal since Russssshhhhhhhh hit the stage. You may not have known Beck then---he was a morning zoo host. you know: clown nose, horn...? I know he has since become a professor AND a preacher! But to call it "news" is more of a stretch than me trying to fit into my old jeans.

Malign? No one does it better than ol Beckster.

"The group most likely to see itself as impervious and others as vulnerable was composed of people with a personality trait called right-wing authoritarianism. People with this trait strongly value tradition and authority, and dislike people not in their own social group.

Right-wing authoritarians' perceptions of themselves as strong and others as weak might help explain this group's strong opposition to gay marriage, Winslow said. But the study, published April 10 in the journal Social Psychology, also highlights that everybody judges themselves as a little bit better than the next guy."
