Ok guys and dolls - I am looking for a good horror movie to watch. Halloween is coming and I want the best horror movie there is to offer that many have not seen. I am a movie buff and have watched all of the classics like Friday the 13th and Halloween and their sequels. I am looking for something along the lines of maybe an independent movie that has flown under the radar and not gained the notoriety it deserves. Something like "Hellhouse LLC", if you have ever heard of that movie - If you haven't, you definitely need to give it a watch.
I don't mind paying for the movie if I have to. I do have all of the available streaming services if you have any suggestions from them. Give me your best suggestion for the perfect Halloween eve movie.
Thanks to all who contribute.
I love the old school and cheesy types of Halloween movies, your typical Friday the 13th and Halloween types but I really like newer movies as well. Have you ever seen The Changeling (1980)? It's really a great movie if you like the type of horror with practical effects like water turning on, lights, flickering etc. my husband really like any Japanese horror movie that has a dub or subtitled version for English audiences. We have Ringu and Ju On (The Ring and The Grudge series). I saw Death Note a few weeks ago, not knowing much about the Japanese anime it's based on and it wasn't too bad, although wasn't scary. Do you have the Screambox app? There's some decent movies on there right now. I should follow this thread too for movie ideas for myself.
Sleepaway camp is a lesser-known one that's half coming-of-age-film, half mystery slasher. I personally really enjoyed it and felt accomplished when the gradual clues let me piece together who the culprit was.
On a side note, I highly recommend Death Note (the anime) for a superb psychological horror series.
I'm not a fan of the horror genre, but I recently watched "The Invitation" and was surprisingly pleased. I've found that the few horror movies I've seen start off with a really cool premise and then dip into mindless violence about halfway through the film. While "The Invitation" is more psychological horror and starts off a little slow, it's premise carries nicely through the whole film, and it has a tense third act and a great twist at the end, which I certainly won't spoil here. I'd suggest it.
You've probably heard of some, but here are favorites:
The Descent
The Strangers
The Orphanage
It Follows
Oldies but goldies:
Sleepaway Camp
Scream
The Shining
Psycho and Psycho 2
Recent films:
Get Out
The Conjuring
Sinister
Donnie Darko too, although it's only horror-ish. Hopefully there's something new here for you to enjoy!
It Follows really creeped me out when I first saw that movie.
Go for the 3 recent films Jeremy listed, is my advice. Oh, and the two Cloverfield films aren't exactly horror, but they're great, very odd, and close to horror.
I never hear anyone talk about the film 'Bone Tomahawk,' but I really enjoyed it. It is both a modern western, and a horror film at the same time.
I've seen Bone Tomahawk. That was a very unsettling movie
I liked it so much I bought a copy for my dad. My dad has been loving westerns his entire life, and in recent years has started getting into some creepy stuff too - so I figured that one covered both bases!
I watched a pretty cool movie called "Tales of Halloween" on Netflix this past week - ten short horror stories that all take place in the same town on Halloween night. Fun stuff and it put me right in the Halloween mood.
Black Sunday (1960) Mario Bava
Rosemary's Baby(1968) w/ Mia Farrow, NOT Zoe Saldana
Sleepy Hollow(1999) w/ Johnny Depp & Christina Ricci
Horror Hotel (1960) Christopher Lee, Patricia Jessel, Valentine Dyall
The Shining(1980) Jack Nicholson
Deliver Us From Evil(2010s)
The Conjuring 1 & 2 (2010s)
Vincent Price's films: The Pit and the Pendulum, Mask of the Red Death, House of Usher, House on Haunted Hill, House of Wax, The Haunted Palace, and my FAVORITE, Diary of a Madman.......
Enjoy, enjoy........en-jooooy.............
"Dead Man" is not in the Horror movie genre but it is about dying and good and evil. Have you seen it? But maybe there is not enough of the scary tension which you are looking for. If fact, it seems Depp is sleeping in much of the movie.
I recently saw IT, it is a good movie. You can add that to the list.
I second the Rocky Horror Show. Also, it's hard to beat The Exorcist.
If you both love Rocky Horror, great! I'll say it wasn't for me; I found it more weird than scary (it's half musical, to those who don't know).
LOL Still love the Exorcist. That music alone is spine chilling. I was back to college a few days early, and had gotten the soundtrack, tubular bells, as a Christmas present. Made the mistake of playing it while alone in a small town, then my creepy landlord came a calling. Creepy, got creepier. I think it's time for you to go now Jackson.

Hehehe...I hear ya. I love horror movies, I used to watch them by myself all the time, but depending on the movie, I WOULD make sure all the doors were locked! Nowadays....I can't remember the last time I was actually alone. Hmm. That kinda sucks.
