Delete or Unpublish?

   I had made a decision to post the chapters of my book here as hubs over a year ago. I am about half way through my book, and am now wondering if I should unpublish or delete those chapters while I finish up. I would hate to delete because there are lots of wonderful comments....but the readership is now very low for the book and I'm wondering if that helps or hurts my standings here at HubPages or with Google....
   
   How does unpublishing versus deleting affect standings? I'm clipping along with Adsense now and don't want to rock the boat...
   
   And I really don't know if I will finish the book this year...2010...I hope too (at least that's my goal!!)

      Neither unpublishing nor deleting would have any effect on your standing with Adsense, if that's what you're concerned about. 
      
      I don't think it would have a negative impact on your Hubber score either, because all your remaining Hubs probably get more steady readership - so your score might actually go up!
      
      I think Ohma is right - ultimately you can use the first chapter as a marketing tool.  Personally I'm not a fan of publishing multiple chapters other than to get some early feedback (which you've already done).
      
      How are you planning to publish?

      Can't you post lots of links to regain traffic on them? or write a hub to promote them and include links inside that hub saying this is your 'diary' of how you worked on the book

   I would not delete or unpublish. I would use them to market the book. When the book is done edit the hubs to include a link to "Where we can get the rest of the story"

   That's a good question, Dorsi. I think it's hard to say how much it would affect your Google rankings. I doubt unpublishing them (I wouldn't delete them either) wouldn't affect your HP rankings much but Google can be a different story.
   
   If they are still getting traffic, I would just leave them as they are. A little traffic is better than none, which is what you'd get if you unpublished

   Google rankings are calculated by key words searches refereed to your hubs, any time a search on Google links to your hub that's a point. As same as here on Hubpages scores.
   If you unpublish your hubm you wouldn't get scores from Google and the visiting counting system is frozen.
   I have an Unpublished Hub that was Published and I need to update, and is not appropriated to make updates editing in parts, It needs to be finished and republished complete.
   Score raised even in Unpublish state, and my general Score is the same.

   Thanks for the advice everyone. I might try self publishing, I'm not sure yet. I am probably going to end up adding some different elements in the book that will turn into a different little animal.
   A friend of mine went to a writers weekend at Mt. Hermon last year and got lots of great leads for publishing his book (he got to meet publishers face to face) and then he decided to submit his book to one of them..... I just know how ferocious the publishing market can be so I really don't know right now.
   I have no problem promoting myself, I'm pretty good at that but I know there is ALOT I need to learn....

   I actually learned this from Yoshi, and it has helped me.  Rule of thumb only UNPUBLISH a hub when it's scoring below 50 for over one week.   Then republish when it, and it will, go up again.

   Leave them alone. Do some keyword research, adjust titles accordingly, and give them some promotion.

      Ah crud Misha in the interest of experimenting I just unpublished the last 11 chapters. Traffic was creeping to a halt on them, I think the highest chapter was at 70. Lowest around 49. Because it's a memoir the topics are all over the place although I tended to zero in on certain subjects each chapter. I should have named them all something different to begin with instead of chapter 2..chapter 3....blah blah blah.
      
      Live and learn! I'll be curious to see what happens the next few days and I'll keep you guys posted. If anything Misha I think the idea of writing a new hub with more of a target is a very good one. Especially now since I've linked up with alot of my old friends in business and publishing. It could get some new life and revive my own interest in continuing the project!
      I'm getting my writers voice back after a lull so time to take advantage of it...lol!!!
      (and BTW, how come you didn't submit a pic for this years sexy writers hub??? Last years was a hoot and I had SO much fun putting that together)
