                RE: soft porn/porn on HP.
From my best recollection, this type of "adult" material is not permissable on HP, and it seems to me that those of us who really are interested in writing quality stuff (at least our best personal definition of the word) should continue to flag this raging-pile-of-crap-on-fire as frequently as we can. I can only think that it will bring our overall ratings down.

Pearldiver, I agree with you on this one.  It's one thing if you want to screw around in the forums, but to create hubs that are not only laced with random sexual keywords, but contain nothing but is not writing.  Hubs like those and hubs with nothing but pictures of fat Indian Bollywood whores do nothing but cheapen this entire site.  How can real writers be taken seriously when their work is sandwiched between subpar wannabe softcore porn.  Hey I'll be the first one to say that there is a time and place for porn, but this isn't it.

I'm not a big believer in censorship so I don't care about such postings. It's important to remember that the Hubs community is a marketplace and if there is no demand for those postings, they will fade into oblivion. That's the best form of censorship if you ask me.

    1. profile image0
bloodnlatexposted 14 years agoin reply to this

I see where you're coming from, and I hate censorship as well.  Yeah while popularity of those hubs my fade, the author (if you can call them that) can leave those hubs up as long as they want.  Threads in the forum are one thing.  They're can be a place to screw around and not taken seriously, but after that it fades away and is gone.  Hubs only fade away after the author deletes them.

I've lost quite a few freelance jobs just for mentioning I have written on Hub Pages.  I've been told that the jobs are more geared to serious writers with proven talent.  That is the kind of reputation Hub Pages is getting.  As soon as I took this site off my resume, I started getting more jobs.

The great thing about Hub Pages is that it gives writers the freedom to write about whatever they want, and is a great place to become a better writer.  The bad thing about it is that it enables people to create hubs with anything they think might make them a few dollars.
Honestly, I'm not here for the money.  I don't think that a whole lot of us are.  There are much better ways to make money writing than on here.  I'm here to grow as a writer and to put together a portfoilo for bigger jobs.

I don't get why they are on the Hub, they must be making money on both sides OR there are so many that the admin can't keep up.  My guess is it is the almighty $$$ sign & though most of us write for quality & hope for sales, these type might just bring the $$$ in, regardless of quality.

I don't believe in censorship, so my guess is the hubs meet the hubpage guidelines.

  17. Daniel Carter profile image62
    Daniel Carterposted 14 years ago

As an additional note, I actually do think that "censorship" is important when material conflicts with the intent. For example, you wouldn't blog about horse racing at itunes, even if blogs did become a part of itunes. The two are completely incompatible.

So call it censorship if you want, but what really is happening is that we are being infiltrated with irrelevant material which reduces our credibility as writers. That isn't so much censorship as it is "category appropriate." HP is not a porn site, but the more that porn shows up, the more we'll be listed in those searches.

So get out the flame-throwers and let's clean it up.

  19. Pearldiver profile image68
    Pearldiverposted 14 years ago

Some really good points made here. Thanks everyone for your input. We've all spent a great deal of time here having our writing association developed with search engines. The points made by Blood, Daniel and the Ladies earlier are very concerning, as it is this very example in this thread that dilutes the professionalism of the site & therefore the perceived quality of its writers; when 'cleaning up' the trash is so easy to do.

Facts are HP has held a position of a quality site; if that reputation is slipping, then so is yours by mere association.
As far as $'s are concerned; it is not so commercially astute to grow in such a way that your advantage is negatively eroded by factors that you have the ability to control at the point of posting.

It's not repression, it is commonsense. If it comes down to wanting to publish trash.... buy your own site and go for it, without degrading the quality that is produced by others.

    1. Daniel Carter profile image62
Daniel Carterposted 14 years agoin reply to this

It really depends on your motives for being here, doesn't it?
I mean, if your motive is just for fun and you really don't care what else is here, then fine. But the question is, is that the intention of this site? Is it just for fun, and is it potporri/free-for-all, or is this a place for writers who want to continue to have a voice, hone their skills and make a few bucks? For me it's the latter. I like the diversity here, but I don't want my writings to be stuck in a mire by association because there are so many sloppy/irrelevant/spammer writers here, also.

I agree that repression is not the issue. Every site on the net is going to get hit with spammers, porn bots and who knows what else, but if they want to retain their original purpose and integrity, they have to do some "police" work to keep it the way it was intended.

This not about censorship or repression to me. It's about trying to keep this site a legitimate place for writers, who can, by association, rank high in search engines. That's why I'm here. I have nothing against porn. It's just that this is not that site. At least that's what I read in the materials for those wanting to sign up for HP.

Serious writers who write widely as many of us do, don't want to get lost amongst this stuff. It is a worry for the reputation of hubpages as a place to find quality articles too, and that is my biggest concern.
