I see fantasy and science fiction is a genre you are interested in. How did you first start?

Mainly from reading books and watching TV shows/movies in the genre.  One of my favorite book series growing up was The Darkangel Trilogy by Meredith Pierce. And I loved shows like Quantum Leap, Sliders, Roswell, Charmed, Buffy, and some of the Star Trek series.

I got into doing role play based on Roswell and Harry Potter, and now have been working on an original project.

I do like fantasy as a literary genre, not at all. But I do like science fiction as a literary genre. Avatar, the movie, is quite detailed in its description of the mining industry. It could potentially spin off into science fiction stories. But fantasy, like Never Ending Story or David Eddings' novels, to me defy the purpose of sticking to genre. They are more like snapshots of weird life experiences- A new puppy or a drooping flower. I think I started writing about lettuce leaves but very quickly graduated to writing about other people's concerns. Editorial journalism. Now I am hoping to reach a new stage of fleshing out some personal bright moments. When synchronicity between mood and information touch a literary style called stream of consciousness and genre like Russian landscape writing.

simple... fro me it is an escape.  reality is sometimes just too hard to take.  just every now and then, i allow myself to escape from it and face a world with problems as well, just very different solutions. hee.  tokien and the dune series were my first discovery of the genre, oh, sorry they were my second, the first was reading a very dusty copy from the library called, when worlds collide... while in fifth grade... which was a tough time for me, but not as tough as a book about the end of the world. hee.  meow48

Star Gazing on Sunday nights while enjoying an outside BBQ with my father, playing make believe as a wee kid (particularly in the car with my father as we use to pretend it was a space ship) and the old Doctor Who series which I used to think was extremely scary.

I grew up with a love for it in a family of sports fans. Being the odd man out made things hard, but I love scifi and fantasy so much it was and is worth all the problems growing up.

I thought I hated both genres until I read The Hobbit in seventh grade for English class. The following year, I was introduced into the Star Wars universe. After that, I became a sci-fi/fantasy junkie.

I started reading both (fantasy and science fiction) well before school age--earliest memories include Jules Verne and Edgar Rice Burroughs among others.  So, let's see, this would have been in the late 1940s (since I was born in '43).

My Mom gets the credit.  Not only had she been an English teacher (as was her father before her), but she brought many books with her when she joined my Dad on the rattlesnake-and-barbed-wire cattle ranch in Montana.  Blending the Mars adventure stories with our rather literal Wild West setting came naturally...smile

I always love reading fantasy and when I was in 6th grade I wrote my first fantasy story.  My 6th grade teacher even accused me of copying it, but my mom vouched for me.  Of course it has changed over the years and is now a full fledged novel I am trying to get published.  My story begun so long ago is the first in a trilogy.  Now I just write and write and write and I love it!
