Why is the liberal media making such a big deal about the sequester cuts?

They are not cuts, but a lessening of the rates of increase.

That's a cut. Cost of living certainly doesn't lessen. Just the opposite. And if you have a disabled child at home, or a child in headstart for day-care...you will feel it. Horribly.

I've noticed the conservative media is making a big deal of it too.  They all probably will until a bigger story steals the spotlight.

Thanks for reading Kathleen. But I don't see how there woudl be a bigger story. At least about the economy)

Lessening the rate of increase is functionally a cut, as the population increases so does the required funds if you cut those increases suddenly the population rises without an equivalent amount of funds which means not enough to go around.

Josak Thanks for answering. On the surface that would seem to make sense, but I believe we have to get a semblance of sanity to our spending. See my comments to justsilvie below

If you tell my Husband he will have to take one day a week off without pay… you are cutting his pay!!! You already lessened the increase when you froze his salary for the last 3 years.

When Bush took office, the national debt was $5.73 trillion. When he left, it was $10.7 trillion. The right acts like he started at 0. If you already have a personal debt no one in their right mind would make a plan that would cut food and shelter. This plan seems to be is along the same lines.

No one on the left argues you have to cut the debt... BUT you have to have real plan and look at each program to see what and where you cut. Mass furloughs are not the answer unless the congress leads by example. Why not pay them by the hour we would already make a dent in that debt, since most of them have spent very little time working in the last four years.

The Conservative’s whole goal seem to be to make sure the rich are not inconvenienced by any additional taxes and there will be some sort of payback for Obamacare. Working on crashing that program and that seem to be their only GOAL!  And the Conservative press is making a big deal! but it is mostly gloating that they once again have gotten their way.

Obama should not compromise on a plan that makes no sense and is not a workable solution.

McCaskill re-submits her bill of last year: "called on her colleagues to swiftly pass her legislation, S.133, which would put an end to automatic pay raises for Congress."
That would save money...let's see if Boehner allows vote. Money, meet mouth.

I appreciate your points Justsilvie. You said:  BUT you have to have real plan and look at each program to see what and where you cut."

That would be the right thing to do, but the left does not want to cut anything." The right is just as bullheaded about raising taxes. Maybe the sequester cuts are a good thing. Maybe public pressure will force both sides to make a real compromise. Not delay the situation and the solution to the future

How is it that 2 cuts to every 1 tax increase is bull-headed, or unfair? The GOp wants all cuts, no tax increase. This is the problem. Dems are willing to compromise, GOP not. Thank you for the civility!

Public pressure has not worked so far...  the GOP's answer is H.R. 607! It replaces sequestration with a delay in the implementation of Obamacare, That and not raising taxes on the rich is their only Agenda!

Number 1, when did news outlets become the "liberal media" versus the (cough, cough) fair and balanced "right wing media?" That observation in and of itself is at the core of the problem with the discourse in this country.

There are too many pundits and politicians that reap in their million dollar profits by causing trouble with their viewing, reading or listening audiences. People listen, read or watch a pundit on TV and all of a sudden they too become political experts.

The bottom line is this...you cannot stimulate the economy if you only cut spending.  That thinking is immature and unrealistic. In order to get this country back on its feet we need to inject money into creating jobs...not for businesses...but for the people. We NEED to add to REVENUE. Anyone  who is a real expert knows that revenue stimulates the economy and that cutting programs, i.e., Social Security, Medicare, Medicaid, etc. only contribute to the continuing woes. Unfortunately, The Tea Party folks can't grasp simple economics.

In 2010 a plane crashed in Alaska. Not just any plane. This one was an F-22. Lost in that crash was the pilot Captain Jeff Haney and 680 million or so dollars of taxpayer money. Why? Well, because 680 million dollars is evidently not enough money to build a plane that properly delivers oxygen to the pilots. The F-22 has cost 10 times more per plane than originally expected and has never once seen a single combat mission.

A week before the sequestration, the F-22 received a $7 billion contract (capped) for modernization for a plane that still doesn't work and still has absolutely no purpose other than letting politicians hump pork. (That's 35 million per plane which is half the cost for what the whole plane was originally projected to cost, for anyone who cares).

I can't speak for the whole left, of course, but it's just not true that we are don't want to cut anything. I'll give you 4 trillion in cuts over a decade from the military budget without even breaking a sweat.

You can cut farm subsidies and oil subsidies and are they still paying business to go overseas? You can allow to bid for drugs, like Europe, so we aren't gouged by big pharma. You can stop the 3 bil to Israel too--13 bil "lost" in Iraq: Find it!!

Ever wonder what private contractor would pay as much for a copy as a prototype? Funny this is the one part of government spending most of the GOP will fight not to cut.
