How has Sarah created controversy and opionion?
Let me count (a few of) the ways:

        1.  By refusing to lie down submissively under the massive attacks she has suffered and be beaten like a rug?

        2.  By daring to state her own side of the story in her remarkable memoir, Going Rogue?

        3.  By carrying her Down Syndrome child to term even after knowing he would be born with an extra chromosome?

        4.   By--oh, I see I get it now.  This has GOT to be the answer:

By actually daring to have an OPINION OF HER OWN.

Yup.  That'll do it every time.  Dare to raise your feathered little head above the level of the many mud ducks and they WILL unlimber their shotguns at you....lol

Sorry but definately no. In joining Fox to encourage the cynical right through the US media Palin can only be a negative factor going forwards and become a mouth piece for Murdoch. From this side of the pond she deserves nothing but marginalising and ignoring. You guys have such a huge chance with Obama to build some bridges with the world and she ain't gonna help....Sorry but you did ask!

I don't think any one should be nominated or given any type of medals, accolades, prestige, applause, unless the person earned such merit. This extends to noble peace prizes, purple hearts, boy scout medals, ect.

I disagree. We should recognize the great things people do, but they should have the merits. It cannot just talks like Obama. It was a joke! The people who nominated him were circus performers and the Nobel Prize Committee did not know a bad act. Therefore, they just applauded (gave him the medal)

President Obama offered a hand of friendship to the world from a nation that has a reputation for being an international bully. The Committee recognized the potential of his act for creating a more peaceful platform on which the world could relate.

And that is how she got her place on center stage.  McCain tried to sway the womens vote from the Democrats after they snubbed Hillary in the primaries.  There is no doubt she is a woman.  But a leader worthy of merit?  She did quit her Governors job and has had several ethics investigations.  Oh give it to her anyway.  America loves a good story even if the facts get in the way.

Here we go again.  Here are a few of the things she has done and where she stands on some issues.

              1. When Palin took over as mayor, Wasilla had zero debt; when she left office 6 years later it had $20 million in debt ($3000 per resident).
              2. She put higher priority on a $15 million sports complex rather than a sewage treatment plant. The sports complex is now viewed as a budget-busting white elephant by local officials.
She proceeded with construction on the sports complex without closing on the land, ultimately costing the city $1.5 million.
              3. She was forced to hire a fulltime administrator as she faced a recall vote for precipitous firings.
              4. As Governor, she provided little guidance and direction to the Legislature on budgets.
              5. The Alaska budget is growing at a rate of 10% per year and the $1,200 payouts due to Alaskans in September are not consistent with restraining government growth.
              6. She allocated $500 million subsidy for a gas pipeline project awarded to a Canadian company, TransCanada, rather than negotiate with an existing private venture to save money.
              7. Palin was the first mayor of Wasilla with a full-time city administrator who did most of the actual, real work.
              8. Palin ignored Anchorage Mayor Mark Begich's attempts to have the state deliver promised money needed to operate city traffic lights until he threatened to go public out of anger.
              8. "Executive abilities? She doesn't have any," according to Nick Carney. Carney groomed Palin for her first political race in 1992 and served with her on the City Council.
              9. A long time borough official said, "The borough takes care of most of the planning, the fire, the ambulance, collecting the property taxes. And on top of that she brought in a city manager to actually run the city day to day."
              10. Palin refused to share an emergency dispatch operation with Palmer, Wasilla's town rival, so she got earmark money for her own system. "Now we have 2 expensive emergency systems and both are losing money", according to a borough official.
              11. Carly Fiorina, one of McCain's key economic surrogates, said that Sarah Pailn does not have the experience necessay to run a major company.
              12. Referring to the planned gas pipeline project from the North Slope,"I think God's will has to be done in unifying people and companies to get the gas line built, so pray for that."
              13. Palin describes the war in Iraq as “a task that is from God…a plan that is God’s plan.”
              14. She opposes abortion for instances of rape or incest, and supported a Constitutional Amendment saying the Constitution does not give right to an abortion.
              15. Her husband Todd was a member of the controversial Alaskan Independence Party
              16. Sarah inquired about banning books at the city's library at a city council meeting.
              17. Palin is for teaching creationism in public schools.
              18. Palin supports a ban on gay marriage and denying benefits to gay couples, stating that she "doesn’t know if people choose to be gay.”
              19. Palin opposes Stem Cell Research
              20. Palin's Wasilla Bible Church promotes "the power of God's love and His desire to transform the lives of those impacted by homosexuality."
              21. Pat Buchanan stated that Sarah was one of his "brigaders" in 1996 and was at a fundraiser for him.
              22. Wasilla was only town in Alaska that charged victims for their own rape kits ($500 - $1200) after Palin fired the police chief and approved a new budget without the line item for it.
              23. Palin told a Wasilla resident that "dinosaurs and humans walked the Earth at the same time," and that "she had seen pictures of human footprints inside the [dinosauer] tracks."

I can find more if you need any more evidence of her inability to responsibly govern.

Ok. Here are a few answers to your "facts". When I have more time I'll answer the rest.

The above is out of context.
"During her second term as mayor, Palin introduced a ballot measure proposing the construction of a municipal sports center to be financed by a 0.5% sales tax increase. The $14.7 million Wasilla Multi-Use Sports Complex was built on time and under budget, but the city spent an additional $1.3 million because of an eminent domain lawsuit caused by the failure to obtain clear title to the property before beginning construction. The city's long-term debt grew from about $1 million to $25 million through voter-approved indebtedness of $15 million for the sports complex, $5.5 million for street projects, and $3 million for water improvement projects. A city council member defended the spending increases as being caused by the city's growth during that time."

Voter-approved. Did you see that part?

3. She was forced to hire a fulltime administrator as she faced a recall vote for precipitous firings.

Again, your "facts" are out of context.
"Palin said that she fired Emmons (librarian) and Stambaugh (police chief) because they did not fully support her efforts to govern the city. The next day, following expressions of public support for Emmons at a personal meeting, Palin rescinded the firing of Emmons, stating that her concerns had been alleviated, and adding that Emmons agreed to support Palin's plan to merge the town's library and museum operations. Stambaugh, who along with Emmons had supported Palin's opponent in the election, filed a lawsuit alleging wrongful termination, violation of his contract, and gender discrimination. In the trial, the defense alleged political reasons; Stambaugh said that he had opposed a gun control bill, Alaska Senate Bill 177, that Palin supported. The federal judge said in the decision that the police chief serves at the discretion of the mayor, and can be terminated for nearly any reason, even a political one, and dismissed Stambaugh's lawsuit ordering Stambaugh to pay Palin's legal fees."

                11. Carly Fiorina, one of McCain's key economic surrogates, said that Sarah Pailn does not have the experience necessay to run a major company.

Neither does Carly Fiorina. Before Fiorina took over HP it was one of the "best companies to work for" in Silicon Valley and in the whole country. She gutted it into an empty husk with her incompetence. So much so that the board mounted an effort to throw her out. She's hardly an authority on "running a major company" even if it is listed on her resume.

12. Referring to the planned gas pipeline project from the North Slope,"I think God's will has to be done in unifying people and companies to get the gas line built, so pray for that."

13. Palin describes the war in Iraq as “a task that is from God…a plan that is God’s plan.”

So, you are now the arbiter of what one may pray for?

14. She opposes abortion for instances of rape or incest, and supported a Constitutional Amendment saying the Constitution does not give right to an abortion.

She opposes abortion for minors without parental consent.

                17. Palin is for teaching creationism in public schools.

She supports allowing the discussion of creationism in public schools, but is not in favor of teaching it as part of the curriculum.

                19. Palin opposes Stem Cell Research

She opposes embryonic stem cell research, which does not yield the results of adult stem cell research. Embryonic stem cell research is a waste of time and money.

20. Palin's Wasilla Bible Church promotes "the power of God's love and His desire to transform the lives of those impacted by homosexuality."

                21. Pat Buchanan stated that Sarah was one of his "brigaders" in 1996 and was at a fundraiser for him.

She is entitled to her political opinions, as are you.

Or don't you think America should stand for that anymore?

Ok since you think it was all taken out of context and tried to clean it up with your version here are some more.

                  24. She used the line item veto to kill several “pork projects” to gain publicity for political reasons, but after public outcry she restored the projects stating that she was not aware of their importance.
                  25. Appointed to chair of oil and gas reserve by Governor despite being highly unqualified.
                  26. Was for the "bridge to nowhere" before it became politically favorable to be against it.
                  27. One resident says she is savvy. She doesn't take positions; she just "puts things out there" and if they prove to be popular, then she takes credit.
                  28. "She announced her decision to scuttle the bridge project in a pre-dawn press statement released to meet East Coast media deadlines", according to Ketchikan Mayor Bob Weinstein.
Palin has repeated her "thanks but no thanks" regarding the bridge to nowhere. However, a NYT article shows that Congressional Republicans had already "put the wrecking ball to it" in 2005, a year before she was elected governor.
                  29. Frontiersman editorial stated "at every turn we find hints of cronyism and political maneuvering. We see a woman who has long-since surrendered her ideals to a political machine.”
                  30. Palin conducted a very political and negative campaign for mayor focusing on issues like religion and abortion instead of local issues.
                  31. Palin's selling of Governor's jet was used to distinguish her as a reformer despite the fact it was already very unpopular among Alaskans and logically any new Governor would have sold it.
                  32. A conservative columnist, Paul Jenkins, confronted Palin about evidence she conducted campaign business from her mayor's office. She admitted to it and got a Fairbanks reporter to call him asking why he was trying to smear her.
                  33. To clean up her image Sarah Palin sprung the wedding of her 17 year old pregnant teenage daughter to her 18 year old fiancé before the November 4 election. The wedding would divert attention from the campaign at a critical time.
                  34. She hired another top cop, but he had to resign after 2 weeks for a prior sexual harassment charge. The state gave him a $10,000 severance package for just 2 weeks on the job. [51]
                  35. She was criticized for publically asserting that the US would go to war with Russia if Georgia was a part of NATO rather than giving a more diplomatic response appropriate for world leaders.
                  36. Both Palin and McCain have distorted her record on budget cuts and spending, and how she stood up to Senator Ted Stevens on the “Bridge to Nowhere”.
                  37. A Frontiersman editorial wrote, “Mayor Palin fails to have a firm grasp of something very simple: the truth.”
                  38. Newshounds reports that "Palin told a passel of lies during her convention speech(9/3/08). But you’d never know it from watching FOX News’ analysis”.
                  39. She hypocritically preaches abstinence despite evidence that she eloped because she was pregnant (having baby within 8 months of marriage) and married in a civil ceremony.
                  40. Frontiersmen in 1997 accused Palin of making "patently untrue statements, unrepentant backpedaling, and incessant whining that her only enemies are the press..."
                  41. Palin deceived Americans by saying she put a state jet on Ebay when in fact it failed to sell three times and was eventually sold through a Broker, also a Palin supporter, at a $600,000 loss.
                  42. Palin lied about firing her personal chef as Governor in an attempt to make her look more fiscally responsible. The chef was actually reassigned because Palin spent so little time at the governor's mansion.
                  43. She claimed that Alaska "produces nearly 20 percent of the U.S. domestic supply of energy" when facts show it is actually 3.5 percent (and 4.8% if strictly talking US Oil Consumption and 14% if talking US oil production).
                  44. Palin told Gibson: "Yes. I didn't blink then even when asked to run as his running mate". However she later told Hannity that "she asked her girls to vote on it, and they're like absolutely, let's do this mom." So which version is it?
                  45. Email records from scientists on polar bears obtained by a University of Alaska professor shows they agreed polar bears were in danger -- Palin had said the scientists had found them not to be in danger.
                  46. Palin outed Republican leader Ruedrich for conducting party business on state time; then later hypocritically "did the same thing that Randy Ruedrich did” according to conservative columnist Paul Jenkins who confronted Palin with evidence.
                  47. During her speech to the RNC, Palin claims that "the teleprompter got messed up, I couldn’t follow it, and I just decided I’d just talk to the people in front of me". That false story has largely been debunked by reporters who were there.

I don't know why you want to back this slimebag as a candidate when there are so many other good candidates to choose from.  From what you say she is a misunderstood person constantly taken out of context when her actions stink and shows a constant need to be in the spotlight despite her unworthiness.

Outstanding contribution to American society? Sarah Palin? I'm sick of her divisiveness. All her talk about "real Americans", which is her way of saying people from rural areas are better than people who live in cities, really irritates me (and I happen to be a "country boy"). There has been a movement among some Republicans in recent years against the "elitist" intellectuals in our society, and Sarah Palin seems to now be at the forefront of that movement. There was a time when intelligence was celebrated, not marginalized. Those were the "good ol' days" I remember fondly.

      Good morning,

For over 40 years, the President of the United States has awarded the Citizens Medal -- the second highest civilian honor in our nation -- to Americans who have "performed exemplary deeds of service for their country or their fellow citizens."

Now for the 2010 Citizen's Medal, the White House is opening up the process to include an exciting source of nominations: you.  President Obama is inviting the American public to nominate candidates he should consider for the Presidential Citizens Medal -- truly making this an honor of, by, and for the American people.

Who has inspired you?  Whose selfless dedication to service has touched your life or the lives of others?

Watch the President explain the program in this web video and then nominate an unsung hero from your community:

Past winners of this prestigious honor have included respected public figures like Colin Powell, Bob Dole and Rosa Parks, as well as everyday heroes like Oseola McCarty, a washerwoman who left her entire life savings to establish a scholarship for students in need. As you can tell, the bar is set pretty high -- only a handful of nominees will be chosen, so be sure to read the criteria closely and make the best case you can for your nominee.

This year, the President will be looking for several qualities in the special few he honors: people who have demonstrated a commitment to service in their own community or in communities farther from home; who have helped their country or their fellow citizens through one or more extraordinary acts; whose service relates to a long-term or persistent problem; or whose service has had a sustained impact on others’ lives and provided inspiration for others to serve. While many Americans work every day to serve others, this year's Citizens Medal will specifically honor those who have shown exemplary service to help others outside of their normal jobs.

Take a moment to nominate that everyday hero for the Presidential Citizens Medal and help honor his or her unwavering commitment to service.

Nominations will be reviewed by White House staff. The most compelling of these nominations will be sent to the President for his final decision.  Then late this spring, Citizens Medal recipients will be invited to receive their awards in a ceremony at the White House.

      Thank you,

      Michelle

You could list her attributes in your opinion if you would, because just saying that you know is not really giving a reason why you are behind her -  It wouldn't change my mind anyway, because you cannot dispute that she is ignorant and hunts wolves from planes.  (in other words, don't waste your time trying to convince me, especially by just saying you've done your research - this doesn't impress me at all)

Since your mind is already closed on the subject there is really no reason for me to exert myself. But I I'll toss you a bone anyway because Sarah is worth the effort.

Sarah was basically told to "shut up and take it" regarding the flak she was taking with ethics charges, slowly going bankrupt, unable to defend herself by being stuck in Alaska, and building up ill will with her base in Alaska by using taxpayer dollars to defend herself as governor, all while being blasted by the biased media.

Her brilliant response was to kick over the table. The one thing no one thought she would do - resign as governor - she did. And they're still reeling from it. So now, of course, "she's a quitter". No, it took an in-depth understanding of how politics really works in this country to do what she did. And it took enormous courage. To understand this political move one must understand the dynamics of power - something she does completely.

Obama can't hold a candle to her.

Since when is being a quitter a courageous thing to do?

How can she understand the "dynamics of power" is she can't understand or remember much simpler things (like the name of majore news papers or some of the Founding Fathers)?

The women is so supremly ignorant that I wonder if she ever finished high school

Just because you asked Madame X, here are some of the facts that will back up my opinion:

Just because she can see Russia from her backyard does not mean she knows the first thing about Russian politics, history, mentality or strategic intents.

Let me assure you that I can see the moon from by backyard; does that make me an astronaut?

I would not go as far as to expect her to have read Plato’s and Socrates’ Dialogs (so she may get an idea about what is required to be at the helm of a country), but for some one who can’t name major news papers or the Founding Fathers and invokes the name of God and attributes all her actions to Him, is just too much.

If she could not control her own daughter and prevent her from getting pregnant Sarah Palin is not qualified to talk to our children about moral values that she obviously did not instill on her own child.

Ghost32posted 14 years agoin reply to this

First of all, Sarah Palin never said she could see Russia from her back yard; it was comedienne Tina Fey who made hay with that line.  Sarah did say that from certain parts of Alaska, you can see Russia, which happens to be the truth.  Perhaps a simple statement of fact discqualifies one from erudite discourse?

As to attributing her actions to God, I keep seeing anti-Sarah posts referring to her doing that, but have yet to see or read anything she actually said that would identify her as any sort of religious fanatic.  True, she does believe in God.  Also true, those who so believe do ALSO believe that God has a plan and that their lives are divinely directed. So now you have to be an atheist to qualify as a public servant?

"Control" her own daughter?  You've found you can perfectly control your own teens, I take it?  So, what's the best method--mind control?  Concentration camps?  Slipping anti-libido substances into their food?  Teen pregnancy is a problem throughout the land, and Sarah does not duck the issue.  In fact, she very much wanted to tackle it headon during McCain's Presidential campaign but was vetoed.  That same daughter has "manned up" (so to speak), is raising her son as a single mother while working to make her own living, admits her mistake, and advocates for abstinence prior to marriage BECAUSE she knows she slipped up.  Sound pretty mature to me.

Your being able to see the moon may or may not make you an astronaut, but Sarah is far from dependent on being able to see Russia as a "lone qualification" to handle high level politics.  Her college degree includes a minor in political science, more direct education in the field than that enjoyed by most of the lawyers currently in office.

Nor was it a matter of her not being able to remember the names of newspapers.  It was simply that she DOES read all available newspapers.  She's been an obsessive reader since early childhood.

                    Next.

No, you do not have to do all that. You only need to be a good loving mother (parent); demonstrate and impress upon your children the value you want from your children; and most importantly be available, always make time for your children.

"Sarah does not duck the issue."

It is easy to talk in hindsight. It is something she cannot fix.

Talk with them and explain to them that sex is not something they can experiment. Tell them that it will be a mistake that cannot be fixed. Lastly, ask them that do they want to be responsible or ready for another human being that they may create.

Misha, I am talking from experience. They are not "just talks". Those were what I gave my children.

          1. Misha profile image62

Firstly, all children are different, and if yours were receptive to that kind of rhetoric, not all are. In fact I strongly suspect that yours did not listen to you and experimented, they just got lucky (or unlucky) to not make any babies. Or they might have been smarter and used contraceptives. Either way, statistically they were more likely to have sex as teens than not. smile

Secondly, I personally don't see why exactly sex is not something they can experiment with. smile

This does not invalidate the point though - teen sex is a common place, and singling out one parent for this is just ridiculous IMO - even leaving aside whether teen sex overall is beneficial or not.

Again, for the record, I do NOT support Sara for president and never did LOL.

I'm surprised they didn't get an African-American women to run on the republicans side. Obama deserved the prize he received because he made a nation, that is split up, in a dangerous way, join together despite their differences. We the people came out from the shadow cast over us by "THE GOVERNMENT" and demanded change. Now, we're back under our rock, scared, a country of people too afraid to face the problems we have and the problems we are imposing onto the world and change. Even the people who voted for Obama are so scared that they are starting to hate him. He is trying folks, he is trying hard, but he is being blasted at every turn with hate and people pushing him away from success, because they do not want him to be a success, they want to hold back momentum forward.
