What is the best way to communicate with people? Phone, e-mail, long talks, short visits...?

I have always felt that in matters of great import, the written word works best.

    E-mails are fine.

I remember an old saying that sums it up well:

"The spoken word is in the wispy air......
..The written word  is  always  there."

I think it's in person, face-to-face with your words, your body language, and how you say what you say.

It always bothers me when someone wants to ask someone else a question and texts them. Finally after multiple texts the question is answered but if they would have just called the person it would have been answered in 1/3rd the time. Texting is a waste of time if you ask me and the best way to communicate is to talk face to face or by phone.

For me, there is no BEST way.  Four factors to consider are:
    1) Your relationship with the person.
    2) The subject matter & how important or delicate it is and
    3) How easy or difficult is it to reach that person.
    4) By which mode are you a better communicator?

I have a schedule that is unusual for most people, so it is nearly impossible to reach me in the evenings by phone, yet I am usually awake and starting the day while most people in my time zone are sound asleep, so it is easier to get in touch with me via email or text.  I respond promptly to most emails.

Some people are more comfortable and thus express themselves better by writing, others do it better by phone or in person.

Face to face contact and if that is not applicable because of distance, then definitely a phonecall.
Emails and such are more for businesses I think. Although if you know someone internationally, then an email would certainly be cheaper than phone and faster than sending snail mail.
I think that's why Skype was invented, so that face to face contact could still be possible regardless of distance.

In my communications major we discussed something that has stuck with me to this day. It's called channel richness, and its simple to understand. The more remote the medium of communication between persons, the more vague will be the communication. The richest channel is person-to-person contact for sure. Then, just go down the line and think of others: telephone, letters, email, etc. The difference today is that some media, like online (chat) conversations have been boosted on the richness scale by better technology (think Skype). And this is the way the world is headed. We'll all be essentially talking face-to-face from our phones real soon.

Depends on the situation...but the written word can sometime be the most dangerous way to communicate because it can be misunderstood or be read with the wrong tone.  But writing helps me to process my thoughts so I often write it down for myself but then meet with the person face-to-face and use what I wrote as my own guide to remember what I wanted to say.  It's nice to have body language and see the person's facial expressions...I've heard it said that most communication is actually non-verbal so if you don't meet face-to-face, you miss out on that!
