Is it impossible to become a freemason if you are not a christian?

I recently participated in a question on HubPages which led me to believe that most freemasons are christians. Please don't misunderstand this statement because I am not saying that christians are freemasons but simply stating that it is likely that most freemasons are christians since you cannot join a lodge or be a grandmaster if you do not have a religion. Does anyone know the facts about these things and are they willing to enlighten us?

Freemasonry is open to men of all religions.  According to freemasons and authors Christopher Knight and Robert Lomas who have several interesting books on the subject:

"Colour, race, creed or politics have always been irrelevant to membership and its two driving goals are social order based on freedom of the individual and the pursuit of all knowledge.  The only absolute requirement is a belief in God ... any god." -- The Hiram Key by Chris Knight and Robert Lomas,1997.

I have doubts, if any Freemason will ever reply to your present query ...
Its like asking Hasan Sabbah ... Old man of the Mountain ... the exact Layout of his Earthly Paradise, and Organization ... operating out of the Fort at Alamut ...

Hassan bin Sabbah ... is Founder of the Secret Order of "Hashisheen" during Middle Ages, what were the Dark Age of Europe; in that sense, he is the "grand- father" of all the Secret Societies, Movements and Organizations, that have existed or exist in the world today, viz. Knights Templars, Freemasonry, CIA, MI 5 [or is it MI 6] and other secret Societies, Organizations and Movements.

All these "cloak and dagger" entities, strictly follow the "Organizational Pattern" Devised by Hassan Sabbah. This includes the required "Credentials" of the incumbents/recruits ...

Read about the Hashisheen in any standard encyclopedia, and you will find, if it is essential for one to be a Christian or a Jew to become a "Right Hon. Member" of the Freemason Movement.

From what research I've done and from knowing others who have become freemasons, it is not a requirement to be of a Christian following (at least in the USA), and you need not declare how you interpret the force that drives this universe.
