What does it mean to hope?

Not to hope for like a cake or to hope for that one car I  mean to hope for something better.

Could be an evidence or non-evidence based belief that the future will be better than the past has been.  In short, that is how I see the meaning of hope.  We're all in this together, and life will get better.

Having hope gives a person the motivation to keep on keeping on when things are grim because there is a chance that tomorrow, next month, or next year could be better. Without hope or faith there would probably be a lot more suicides.
One of the secrets to having a good life is always having something to look forward to. When you no longer have anything to look forward to that is the day you start to die if not physically then spiritually. One man's opinion! :-)

The meaning of hope is part of the depth of the human capacity for joy and faith in a better future. It amazes me to think of the downtrodden people who nevertheless have hope for better things. It's part of our nature to hope for something better,a better life to help us cope with whatever is making us sad.
I,myself, have lost my husband of 58 years, and hope seems futile. But I know I must do something about my attitude. So I've been thinking of leaving these four walls and seeking others to help.So perhaps that is what I think it means to hope, even against all odds.

To believe there is a possibility for something that is not to be or happen... hope

Hope is the belief that things will improve and there will be a tomorrow. Hope is not something the American President Obama is good at generating.

If I think something is hopeless; it can become senseless to keep moving on.  Now if I have hope in something, that is all I need to keep moving forward.  For hope to be hope, it requires some kind of assurance we can have confidence in.
