The Beautiful Greek Island Corfu

Corfu known as Kerkyra, the Greek Island, in the beautiful iridescent indigo Ionian Sea

Temperate climate which attracts may visitors, as well as a few wicked Autumn storms

The island is green, as opposed to others on the east coast; olive groves, vineyards and orchards abound along with beaches and hilly walks

A Phaeacian island colonised by the Corinthians in 734BC, The Beautiful Greek Island Corfu flourished for centuries and became part of the Macedonian empire before the Romans took control in 229BC

Before the tourists invaded, the island was trampled across by many raiders as they sailed around the Adriatic and it became a geographic meeting point

Venetians ruled the Beautiful Greek Island Corfu after the Crusades and Corfu continued separately from Greece

French rule was overthrown by the Russians who were again usurped by the French, then the English, making Corfu a little like a bouncing ball between rulers, hence the mix of architecture in the town, British palaces, Venetian houses, French esplanade

The patron Saint is Saint Spiridan who has a Church in his name

Prince Philip hubby of Queen Elizabeth II was born here

Odysseus washed ashore here on the island of Pondikonisi where the 17th Century monastery of Panaygia stands, reached at low tide by walking across the sand flats

The blue waters use up a lot of food dye to create a relaxing sun-soaked atmosphere

Corfu was surrounded by walls, now only a bastian and two gates remain of the Old Fortress

The New Fortress was built by the Venetians in 1577-1588 and overlooks the harbour (look for the winged lion as the Venetian symbol)

The centre of town has a pedestrian walk, multitude of shops and even a cricket field on the Beautiful Greek Island Corfu.
