You can't beat a Shi Tzu. We have had one for going on 17 years now, and a sweeter, more child friendly dog you will never find.

This is a strange question really as virtually everyone will just tell you that their breed is the best!
Its already started with the shi tzu - In fact I'll join in with them and recommend the doberman - not so small but great with all members of the family.

Really though which ever dog you go for will have to be well trained and socialised. And NEVER leave a dog of any breed alone with children - as nice as the dog may be children can provoke even the friendliest dogs to snap

Without hesitation I would recommend a dachshund. I had a miniature long haired dachshund for 18 years growing up and throughout he was my very best friend.

Miniature schnauzers are usually pretty good.  So are pugs and beagles.  I love terriers, but can't recommend them for small children.  Blue and Red Healers are good too, but they're more medium size.  I don't have any experience with the toy breeds.  Remember, dogs are individuals too.

I think a Havanese might be a good choice - friendly and durable. Beagles and pugs are also pretty good family dogs. I wouldn't recommend a dachshund.Even though individuals in the breed may be friendly, a University of Pennsylvania study found the breed to be the most aggressive.

There are two books I recommend and keep on my own bookshelf for reference:

    1.  Tortora, Daniel F.  The Right Dog for You:  Choosing a Breed That Matches Your Personality, Family and Lifestyle. New York:  Simon and Schuster, 1980.

    2.  Walkowicz, Chris.  The Perfect Match: a Buyer's Guide to Dogs.  New York:  Wiley Publishing, Inc., 1996.
