Why do Labradors love water more than any other dog breed?

Out of all the dog breeds I have had over the years, the Labrador seems to truly love water and jump right in.  I know other dog breeds love it too, but it seems the Labrador really loves water. I wonder why that is for that breed?  I turned on my backyard sprinkler the other day and our Chocolate Lab played in it non-stop for the entire time it was on. LOL

They were came from the St. John's water dog (which resembled the English lab). St. John's water dog used to assist fisherman. It became extinct about in the 1800's.
The American Lab is a duck retriever (they both did a lot of swimming). So they are very much related to water.
Besides which they assist certain handicapped people so they may need to refuel their thirst - I do not know if that has anything to do with it.

Thanks so much, Kevin, for leaving such an informative answer here. I did not know all of that about labs. Very interesting.
