How to find people who will model for free?
I have dabbled in stock photography and have been accepted as a contributor by several sites. I would love to extend my portfolio to include shots of people but I don't have enough money to pay for models. Can anyone suggest ways of finding people who will model for free?
The first thing that comes to mind is ask your friends or friends of friends. I bet they know someone who would do it. Also, lay it out and be honest; explain you don't have the money to pay but you give them full rights to their shots and they can add it to their own portfolio. Some models on reputable sites like Model Mayhem, will work for free just for the exposure and experience.
Also, why not offer a barter? Maybe you can dog sit or offer a photography lesson or maybe there's another service you're good at, that you can offer, like computer support or resume writing, for example.
Hope that helps.
Word of caution; Do not get on Craigslist to look for models. Go to a reputable site specifically for models.
I often get in touch with schools that offer photography classes. I do barter with them and will get models in exchange for giving a demonstration, explaining techniques and so forth. One of the best ways that I have found is to ask people I know to model in exchange for free copies, but schools always seem to come through.
Thank you for your suggestion Luis. My friends are all too shy or not willing to sign a model release that would allow me to sell and distribute their photos and there aren't any photography schools in my area. But thanks for answering my question:)
