Well, the business world being what it is, my advice would be to ALWAYS be ready to be terminated/downsized/outsourced/whatever. Keep tabs on opportunities in your area of expertise. Don't stake your career on one company. Do the best you can but don't let any false sense of loyalty to a company lull you into thinking they will in turn be loyal to you. Be a good employee, educate yourself, move on when you have to/want to.

Downsized, outsourced, & laid off aren't viewed negatively.  Those aren't terminations.  Termination is BEING FIRED through one's own fault.  That is something to be ADVISED against.  Being fired from a job is A CAREER KILLER.

If one has to be told not to lie, cheat, steal, etc in order to not be fired for cause, advice is moot.

The only way to avoid that is to launch your own business.  Even if you're under excellent working conditions, you never know when you'll get a new supervisor or owner, and everything goes up in smoke.
