Yet another school shooting. What are the causes? How do we reach these sad, lost people?
I think thirty minutes have gone by without an answer to this question because we all scan it and say, "I wish I knew."
Why wasn't this happening with the same frequency years ago? What's changed? If guns were outlawed would kids then resort to other weapons to get the same results? Does the hatred or anger go that far?
The answer to your question is only more questions, sorry.
It's because of psychiatric medications. Withdrawing off psych rx's "cold turkey" brings about a condition called akathisia. It's an unbearable combination of anger, anxiety and aggression. One of the Columbine shooters was on Luvox. Another very well-known serial killer (not a school shooter, though) was on Halcion.
Here's a link to an article about psych Rx's and akathisia:
http://www.mindfreedom.org/kb/psychiatr … =akathisia
This is a quote from the article at the above URL: "~ The Food and Drug Administration in 2004 required manufacturers to update the drugs’ labels to warn of the possibility of “anxiety, agitation … hostility (aggressiveness), impulsivity, akathisia” and other problems, including suicidal behavior. ~ "
The young man at the University of Virginia had also been on psych meds. Unfortunately, the press always reports such occurrences as, "The shooter went off their Rx's and so the underlying 'illness' resurfaced." That's not true. The shootings are caused by the withdrawal psychosis --- or, at times, just by the drugs themselves, even if there's no withdrawal.
The problem may be that we don't know they are sad, lost people until it is too late. I'm not sure, if the parents didn't pick it up, how someone outside the family could.
For some there is no reaching because they push people away through layers of walls. Choices of clothing, makeup, wild hairstyles, offensive body odors, vulgar speech, and open anger or aggression would make most people not want to get too close on various levels. The young man who was grazed by a bullet on the ear said something that was very telling. He said he was friends with they shooter until about the 8th grade when the shooter began changing and went "gothic." His choice of friends and outward appearance did a 180. While it is a person's right to choose how they present themselves, a change from mainstream or a clean cut appearance to gothic should have raised lots of questions in the parents eyes. I think parents and guardians are the most important influence in a child's life. Their actions and inaction related to raising their children have the potential to constantly plague society as a whole.
A lot of the shootings seem to be by people that were bullied physically or mentally. There are also warning signs like them saying they want to kill people. In this case I heard that he was an outcast that was bullied. I do not know if normal people that were bullied become shooters or if they were bullied because they had a mental problem that set them apart.

Another day, another school shooting. This time it occurred in Santa Fe, Texas with up to 10 people dead. What's obvious is that these students could not defend themselves. Until all high school students are allowed to bring their own guns to school for self-defense purposes, none of them will ever...

So the kid in the Colorado school stopped shooting after only two minutes. Why? Because there was an armed guard in the school who backed him in a corner. Imagine that. When good guys have guns, they stop bad guys. And why isn't this news worthy? Because he wasn't carrying a semiautomatic weapon....
