Is there any point in replying to a comment on a hub left by a guest?

I usually reply to comments left by a "guest" just in case they return again.  But now I'm wondering if it's a waste of time.  Do they ever see a reply?

I was a guest on here for about three months before joining. It was the niceness of the responses that finally got me to join. I think it is totally worth our time to be nice and answer comments of guests. I had a few that would not answer me but answered all others. Those that left me nasty comments, I have never returned to their hubs. We get paid for them visiting too.

If like me you share on social media you never know for sure where the guest came from. In most cases I have known though. If anyone leaves a quality comment it is in your best interest to reply to it. With each of the writers being on a sub domain anyone who visits our hubs is considered a visitor by the ad companies who put the ads on our hubs.

Replying to a comment puts the hub back into the eyes of other hubbers. The more is it seen the more people will have a reason to click through. In my case with only 60 hubs this has made a difference. Social sharing increases views so putting it in front of any hubber who shares makes writing a comment worthwhile.

Thank you so much.  You have answered my question beautifully.  I didn't know this.  Much obliged!

Comments and interaction show that a hub is active, and therefore of interest to Google as well as other Hubbers.  A conversation, even with a guest, is always valuable for SEO.

More people are likely to view your hub then take the time to post a comment. Whenever I receive a notification that I have a comment on one of my hubs I will usually post a "thank you" comment. If their comment disagrees with me I usually further explain my point of view and thank them just the same.
I may not follow the hub I posted a comment on but very often I will eventually check back to see if the author responded to the comment or point I made on their hub.
There are some Hubbers that don't allow comments to be posted. Personally speaking writing without getting (feedback) is like throwing something down a black hole. Every "serious" writer, actor, musician, or artist I know of looks forward to getting reviews. (Hopefully positive ones). That is how they know their work is appreciated and respected. Of course there are those who are happy with simply having a high number of clicks or AdSense revenues. To each his or her own. :-)

Aside from the personal benefits wheelinallover has mentioned, I think one should reply to comments only for pure politeness. Not doing so is negative PR. I'm always grateful when hubbers reply to my comments and I don't like it at all when they just ignore what I wrote.

As RolyRetro pointed out it's good for SEO. It's also a friendly way of thanking someone for a visit to your hub.

I always do, because we can never know when they may come back, specifically looking for acknowledgement of their comment.  I  wouldn't want them to feel slighted.  Some "guests" visit hubs often.  They may be interested in joining HP and would love to talk to a hubber.

You make an excellent point regarding the possibility of a guest joinin HP.  Thank you so much!

Many don't return to comment again and probably don't return at all, but some of those that do can turn into  friends with much to offer on a particular subject and even important people in the writing and movie-making fields for example. So yes, I'd say treat and reply to them like you would any other comments.

I always answer any comments, unless it is really weird or something. Guests though are leaving a comment and deserve a reply; in my opinion. It is a courtesy.
