Pinging helps your hub - or any other URL for that matter - to get indexed faster. No more, no less.
I don't think pinging helps with traffic. It's just a way to get the search engines to notice your link so that you can get indexed.
I ping to get indexed which then allows for people to find my Hubs via search. I think it's a important part of promoting.
Two years on here, and more on the Internet, so I should be ashamed to ask this, but...
What's "pinging"? (and how do I ping?)
Easy, Lisa! There are a number of places that you can use:
Feedping
Ping45
Ping-o-Matic!
Autopinger
Pick the one you like best and fill in the blanks.
If you don't like any of these, just do a search for others.
Shirley, thanks. Believe it or not, I've never heard of these places. I once saw the word, "ping", when I tried to see if I could delete a forum post I made "by accident", and I thought it was a bad thing.
(I don't really live in a cave. Sometimes I just feel like I do. )
You're very welcome. Hey, don't worry about it, I often have to ask my kids or younger friends about stuff like this. I've learned a lot that way - in plain English for computer illiterate dummies like me.
I really don't think you will need to ping if you have some patience. Any Hub you write will be indexed pretty soon (48 hours). Google loves HubPages and hence may index all hubs every day. If you want your hub to be visible instantly then you might want to ping.
Thanks for this info, Shirley. I didn't know about this, either, and my husband works in technology. Its a running joke in our house about how much I manage to ignore as he talks about what he does for a living! LMAO!
Anyway, thanks for this.

That's funny, MH! Sounds like you've perfected the 'tune out'!
Thanks for the links but now I have to ask this very studpid question, what is pinging and what does it do and how do you do it?
I do not ping. I believe that Google loves hubpages and gets them out there rather quickly. I dont bother.

Hubbers, I'm sorry that we can't tell you why your traffic is going down or why Google was showing Hubs on hubpages.com and now has reverted to showing them on the subdomain. We are similarly frustrated. We do know Google announced a panda update last week. We also can see Hubs...

Hello. I have some questions regarding Google Analytics and Webmaster tools. Any help is greatly appreciated. When I checked my webmaster tools, I saw a lot of URL errors, a 404 crawl error because apparently "Googlebot couldn't crawl this URL because it points to a non-existent page"....

Hello,I've been on hubpages for about a week. There is only traffic from hubpages and mturk on my traffic tab. How long will it before I start to get traffic from google. All of my articles are featured and I don't want to lose it from lack of google traffic. Thanks!

I love HubPages, I feel that I have learned so much here and my confidence in writing non-fiction took such a huge leap when I was invited onto the Apprenticeship program last year. I have met some wonderful people here - both staff and other Hubbers. But as may other people have said, the idling...

Hello, I have writted approximately 50 hubs and the first 46 or so have been indexed by Google in 2-8 hours. Since January 30th, my latest hubs aren't being indexed. I always tweet, digg, and share my hubs on facebook. Is this normal for Google to not index hubs for four days? I have never...
