I just noticed that traffic to my article on how to grow willow has surged over the last few days. However it seems that the reason could be a featured snippet which has extracted captions from the photos and turned them into a series of steps. However it seems to be a pointless effort on behalf of the algorithm as the captions aren't steps.
Haha. Did you put the images under steps to grow or something?
I have a mixture of photos and text and the snippet starts with the photo at the top of the article before the first introduction text module. The steps are in a single numbered list in a text module followed by several more steps.
I've tried to use keywords in other articles like "steps" or sometimes numbered each text module, but it always seems random and haphazard how the snippets are extracted.
This happened to me a few weeks ago. The photos' caption in the snippet box looks clumsy and unorganized. I didn't like it, so I simply changed the captions, and even deleted some. I admit that doing this was risking, but I used it as an experiment. And now Google is featuring the right content in the snippet box.
From what I have learnt, the featured snippet box is still relatively new: and I personally think it's a good idea to experiment with it. I have learned a lot just by using my articles as experiments with the snippet. But I would advice try it on low traffic hubs.

This morning I received an email from a Hubpages staff member regarding Google snippets (ie, Google Answer box) with this link. I would just like to say that this is something VERY worthwhile. I have been working on ranking this way for over a year, and so far am doing quite well with it. Remember...

After reading the forums about using wide capsules and carefully captioning each one, I went back yesterday to the first four or five hubs I published and upgraded them. I widened the first photo, where possible, and wrote a more pertinent caption, and did the same with all the...

Unlike all the others, traffic has been climbing for this article for the past two years, possibly because of my infographic (Which is now pushed down the page because we're not allowed to use images with text. Is that an issue as regards whether Google will choose the image for a snippet?)Why do...

I'm so excited to see one of my hubs showing up in Featured Snippets. This is responsible for the sudden increase in traffic to the hub. A big thank you to editors and fellow hubbers.

This is my first unfeatured hub. What are the steps to follow to correct errors & make it featured? One of my hubs was unfeatured for the first time today. How can I tell what is wrong with the hub to correct it? Do you just adjust text and resave to have it reconsidered to be featured? What are...
