Life can be so confusing. Many of you are already aware that I suffer from insomnia. I've been ignoring my headaches, fatigue, weight gain, foot pain, and swellings for a long time, assuming it is due to lack of sleep. I had some blood tests a few days ago, and today I received a message from my doctor saying they found traces of thyroid and anemia in my blood. Because the doctor is unavailable for now due to appointments, they recommended that I take some medications for 6 months and repeat the test in a few months.
I'm not sure what type of anemia it is or what stage of thyroid, but I think no one should ever ignore any physical symptoms they experience.

I myself ignore alot because I'm tired of going to doctors who won't work together...
      Which causes more problems.

It's smart to go to the doctor when you have a health concern. Personally, the doctor seems a bit reactive and not looking at your overall situation. I'd get another doctor to look at the blood panel. The symptoms can be remedy with diet, exercise and nutritional supplements. It also sounds like your hormones are unbalanced. Sorry if this is off base. It's just that I research this stuff and have an awesome doctor who has helped me a lot.

I'm sorry to hear you've been having health issues. People here have posted some good advice. My bet is you need to talk with a dietician. Keeping a journal of what you eat might help you to figure out what's not working.

I find moving more throughout the day helps me to sleep. If I get 10,000 steps a day, I usually sleep better. Sometimes... that's just me pacing in my living room at the end of the night watching TV.

      Hello Misbah!
I am sorry to know that you have developed some health issues. It’s wise to take a second opinion to determine the intensity of the problem. Though, I believe that thyroid and anemia can be managed by appropriate medical advice and effective lifestyle changes. Feeling tired or fatigued, weight gain can be one of the symptoms of thyroid disorder. Thyroid issues have become quite common, especially in women. But the good thing is that there are medications available for all of your health issues.
I agree with you that we should not neglect our health and get regular health check ups done, irrespective of age.
My best wishes to you. Take care.

The thyroid is an organ in the neck and typical disorders are hyperthyroidism (overactive thyroid), hypothyroidism (underactive thyroid) or goitre (often due to lack of iodine in the diet).
Usually you can get a printout of the results of blood tests which show the values of parameters tested for in the blood and the upper and lower limits that the should be between.

After thinking about the situation for a while, I agree with people who say that you should see another doctor and get their advice if you can’t get an appointment with your own doctor very soon. I may be misunderstanding, but it sounds like your doctor is basing their decision on just a blood test and hasn’t examined you or discussed the situation with you. If this is the case, it may not be wise to wait six months for the next blood test without seeing a doctor in person. The problem may be relatively minor, but you won’t know this unless you get the correct explanation for your symptoms. I’m not saying that your doctor isn’t correct, but I think a personal consultation is important.

    Hi Misbah,
Sending healing hugs to you. I trust that you will be okay with monitoring of your symptoms and medical follow up. A second opinion would be helpful. I also know that lack of sleep is directly related to just about every ailment of the body and mind. Have you been prescribed anything for sleep? Sleep allows the body to rejuvenate and heal. Misbah, I’m sorry to hear what you’re going through. Please take the advice of everyone here to get a second opinion. Especially find a doctor willing to give you a copy of your bloodwork panel. That information is your property and you deserve to have it.

My doctor always gives me a copy so I can compare year to year how things are doing. As Eugene mentioned above, that report shows you the upper and lower limits of each item so you can see if something is going too far to an extreme.

    1. Misbah786 profile image76
Misbah786posted 2 years agoin reply to this

Mr. Glenn, thank you so much for your kind and thoughtful comment. I'll try to obtain the test results from the hospital, but first, I need to see this doctor and discuss the problem as I have not met her yet, and she prescribed the medication via text message. I'm guessing there's something serious going on, which is why she felt the need to give me medicines so quickly.
When a patient visits an emergency room, they give the test results, but in regular checkups, they keep the results in the patient's record history.
I just received an update from the hospital. They have scheduled a doctor's appointment for 10/10/2022, Monday. If I would not feel satisfied, I will see another doctor, but I prefer to visit this one first.
Thank you for all your love and support, Sir. Your kindness is very much appreciated!

    Hi Misbah,
As I understand it, iron deficiency can cause problems with the thyroid. People here are right to encourage you to get a second opinion but you might also try including more iron-rich foods in your diet - beans, red meat, dry fruit etcetera.
Always follow a doctor's advice though.

    Hello, my dear friends.

You were all concerned about my test results. I collected them from the hospital, and the doctor advised me to continue taking the medication for the next six months. She says she doesn't want to give me Thyroid treatment for now because the level is presently 7.22 mu. int/L, but if it increases to 10, she will have to prescribe a medicine that I will have to take for the rest of my life. She adds my iron level is pretty low for my age; it should be 50 ug/L or above, but it's just 18.5 ug/L right now. So I'll have to keep a close eye on my iron intake. She also advised me to use iodine salt.

That's interesting, so sorry to be nosy, but do they think you could have an under active thyroid (hypothyroidism)? My mother developed this when she was around 70.  Also I wonder do you live in an area in Spain where there is little iodine in the drinking water, which can cause goitre? Anyway they can "fix" you, so that's good smile

    1. Misbah786 profile image76

Thank you, Eugene. She hasn't mentioned hypothyroidism, but she claims I have mild thyroid abnormalities that don't require treatment if the level does not exceed 10. We were using regular Spanish salt in Spain, which has less iodine; strangely, I had never thought about that before. I'm in Barcelona. We only drink bottled mineral water because the water here is unsuitable for drinking. Here's the report if you would like to see it.

"Tirotropina" translates as thyrotropin or thyroid-stimulating hormone. (TSH). It's a hormone produced by the pituitary gland which in turn stimulates the thyroid gland to produce thyroxin. If you're Googling any information about it, it's probably a good idea to find a reputable source such as a government health website. The range of values on my blood tests for TSH are a bit different, but those can differ from country to country.

Good to know Misbah and things are not very serious, and a lifestyle change with iron and iodine intake should help. Please take good care of your diet and health; I am sure you will be healthier, fitter, and more buoyant in no time. My prayers and best wishes are for your healthy life.

I would also like to add my very best wishes. Good that it was discovered early.
Asbestos can still be found in buildings across the country. The following link may be useful if you are worried about it:

Misbah dear -- As you know I am 78, and I haven't seen any doctors for over 16 years. I am using a "blanket prevention" for all possible illnesses -- insisting on a good mood throughout the day, and not allowing the world to get under my skin. I call it my personal sovereignty. I know, my satires are not suggesting that, but you would be amazed how impervious I am.

Now, being quite knowledgeable in matters of mind-body medicine, I can't tell you in this short note how much scientific evidence exists saying how our most predominant emotions are affecting our body -- notably our immune and endocrine system, there thyroid being included. I wouldn't dare to elaborate on your case, but one thing I have noticed is that you are a very delicate personality, with a big heart, deep soul, and that alone could also be affecting your insomnia, and from your lack of sleep could have come this endocrine imbalance.
Body is just another aspect of our mind, and maybe some stress management could be in order beside everything that doctors are suggesting.
From all the scientific literature that I have learned my stuff -- there is a huge evidence of people even curing cancers and other heavy diagnoses by changing their mind-styles -- which they call "spontaneous remission."
I don't want to play too much of a smart ass here, but on the other hand I want to help somehow with what I know and what I use myself.
You know yourself best, sweetie, better than any of us hubbers, and better than any doctors, who are not treating us holistically, but as biological machines. We are more than that -- you are more than that, my friend.
I don't like giving some overly-optimistic prognoses, but in my mind your issue is not serious at all, it's functional, not anatomical, which is great.
Take care querida, you are much, much, much, much stronger than you may think. Don't let any diagnoses scare you. Do some breathing exercise, that takes care of activation of your parasympathetic nervous system which lowers the stressful response of the body. Basically breathe slightly deeper and regular. Especially do that at bed time.
O.K., I am sorry if I am yapping here too much -- just wanted to help somehow, rather than just pray for you. The Dude up there loves you already enough, for, if he wouldn't love such a big heart of yours, then the rest of us sinners are doomed.

Dear Misbah, all your symptoms can be a result of your thyroid problem and I think what you probably have is hypothyroidism, meaning you are deficient in thyroid hormone. Your weight gain, insomnia, anaemia, and leg swelling all can happen due to hypothyroidism. The good thing is if you take the hormone supplement, ie, the medicine, prescribed and keep the level within the normal range, then these other problems will not last too long. What your doctor has prescribed is thyroxin if I am not mistaken. Did he/ she advise any other tests? Just continue taking the medicine as prescribed. May ALLAH bless you with good health.

Just saw the test result that you have attached. You have mild subclinical hypothyroidism. So that’s good In a way because it is not full-blown hypothyroidism. Anaemia is one of the first features of hypothyroidism. It is called anaemia of chronic disorders. You also have iron deficiency. So it could be a combined effect. Anaemia in turn will cause fatigue and tiredness. Your thyroid hormone is still within the normal range. So your doctor has given you the right advice. You can wait for the hormone supplements, though this part is a matter of clinical research and conclusions on whether to start the hormone supplements or not or when to start them, keep getting updated based on the research results. But to make it simple, don’t worry, just continue with the advice and don’t skip your follow-ups and see your doctor if your symptoms get worse. You will be fine IN SHAA ALLAH....

Insha'Allah! Farah, thank you so much for your love and care. Your kindness is much appreciated, my friend.
I'm feeling much better now. The doctor prescribed the medication for 6 months. I've been taking it regularly for more than a month now. I feel much better.  smile

I hope you are doing well. Take care and keep smiling.  smile

Thanks a lot, Farah. It's me. smile
I wanted to inform search engines that I am a human, not an AI. (HP asked us to use our own photos.) Well, after putting that, HP rewarded me for being a popular hubber. I believe search engines liked me— the dp greatly helped. lol! tongue

      Much love and blessings!

I am happy to know you are feeling much better, dear Misbah. Even without the photo as proof, I had not doubt that you are a beautiful person inside and out and you certainly deserve the popular hubber award. Congratulations!
