Okay, I've been here for quite some time and done quite well but still don't understand a lot. I want to put in a referral thingy on my profile - one of those 'sign up for Hubpages here' referral trackers.
I see where some people are signing up for shetoldme through me and would like to do it here, only for HubPages. I read so many posts but still don't get it. Could some kind person please explain it for dummies?
Go to your profile, edit profile say http//hubpages.com/(yourtracker id)
_ abc/user/new and link it with the link option. Hope this was helpful.
Dolores you have to insert a tracker code that you have made up into your URL and then post the whole thing into a link!
Here is the help page link for you :
http://learningcenter.hubpages.com/2-attract-readers/
Good luck
To make a new tracker go to your 'account' page then 'url trackers' then 'create a new tracker' You can call it just about anything you want but remember that your reader will probably see it
You currently have:
ht tp://hubpages.com/profile/http/hubpages.com/_(3w0rc4a5smaev)abc/user/new
you want:
http://hubpages.com/_3w0rc4a5smaev/user/new
that is your ref link that goes directly to the sign up page
You copied the example given to you which was just an example of the random numbers that are generated.
Its usually easier to remember if you use a custom tracker that you make up:
http://hubpages.com/my/trackers
for example I use _stme to keep track of how much traffic comes from shetoldme
Great question and something I've yet to get around to, just spaced it off, thanks for the heads up Dolores
Don't Worry about it Doloris. I have been trying to figure this one out for some time now also. I have gotten the link up and running on my profile but I can't seem to get people to signup once they click.
okay will try...let's see - I can't be the only one who does not understand....
Kmackey - the tracker can be found on your accounts page...now my problem is how do I tell if I did it right?
Once you have made a new tracker you must insert it into the url address that you are going to use. Then you have to make a link on your profile page using the new url you just made as the link!
Ok I found my tracker. Do I post the link in my bio? I feel dumb and Ive been on this site a year... lol I created a new tracker now where do I post that?
I just looked at your profile and it looks right. I'm not loving the "here", but it's right.
If you should decide you want to place these in more than one place, it may be a good idea to create different trackers, so you can track which placements are getting results, ie. through a hub, your profile or elsewhere.
@dolores I don't think it is quite right I believe there should be and underscore in the url as per this sample:
//hubpages.com/_newtrackercodehere/profile/yourname
or
//hubpages.com/_newtrackercodehere/user/new
Note the underscore after the .com/_
I left off the http: so it would not make a link
I just had a look and I don't think it will work having the two lots of hubpages.com you may confuse the machine:)
okay, agvulpes, will check that out. And hmmmm, don't like the word here. All this stuff just takes some time to sink in.
K - well you can't be any dummer than me and I've been here longer than you have.
Thank you for asking the question - I have been muddling about on my own trying to figure this out for three months. And to agvuppes, you have my undying gratitude for supplying the answer. Thanks to you I'm good to go!
I shall make a video for people so they can visualize these concepts...not today; sorry, but soon.
I see that so many people do that on their profile pages, and I've never looked into it. I guess I've always just kind of assumed nobody would want to sign up through my profile. It's nuts, I know, not to just include it (and I guess maybe I'll "copy" everyone else and add it to my profile one of these days).
I guess I've always thought about how, even if I were reading on some site and saw that, my instinct would be to return to the site's home page and look for "sign up here". One of the biggest things I need to overcome is not taking advantage of some things (on here) because I just assume they aren't going to be effective without even trying them.
Lisa - as a high profile hubber, people interested in writing online articles may decide to check out HP, see you there, read your stuff and say 'hey, this is good stuff. I want in!'
Hmmmm, a video would definitely clear up the muddy water - Thanks for being agreeable to that! I don't get it either and I am trying to teach 2 other people how to do it - We three are officially, "The blind leading the blind,"
Hang in there, Lisa!
Thanks! ;-)
It has to be done exactly as agvulpes writes. And I do mean exactly and you have to remember the http://
And do it in the absolute correct sequence. It took me over an hour of messing about making all kinds of mistakes before my dull wit was able to duplicate the communication. I am definitely a 'show me' type of learner.
I have had a few sign up thru the tracker but havent written hubs yet.
It took me a while for it all to sink in, where to find everything !
A lot to learn, however most things are found in the forums if you use the search button up the top.
I have had quite a lot sign up through my shetoldme, but none from my hubpages tracker yet! strange!
After just seeing Dolores' post, I thought I'd try to do the tracker thing on my profile. Besides often having a reading-concentration problem these days (stress), I'm such a "verbal person" I have trouble digesting any instructions that have anything other than words in them.
So, can I try to reiterate for myself and anyone else here...
A. There's these codes?
1. The URL tracker code we can find on our account.
2. The URL for our profile page?
3. The URL for the sign-up page, right?
B. Step 1: We go to our account and copy our tracker code? (and maybe paste it in notepad for safekeeping) until we type into our profile something like, "Sign up here")
Step 2: We click on the blue "link thing" across the top of the text, right?
C. We see the space/blank line where we need to enter or paste codes.
D. Now, if all this is right so far, we need (I know) to be careful not to add or eliminate any characters whatsoever (obviously).
E. There should be no spaces, right? Everything should just be "rowed up" without spaces or commas, right?
F. So, now, are the only two codes we need to enter the code for our URL tracker and the code for HubPages sign-up page?
F1. Which code goes first?
F2. Do we also need to enter our profile page URL there too?
F3. In what order to we enter the three codes, if we need to enter three?
Having re-worded the whole thing for my own "mental sorting", the main questions are:
1. Are the three codes I included above the three (and only three) that have to be entered.
2. We add them where we usually add the in-text links, right?
3. In what order?
(Sorry for all this over what's obviously a pretty simple thing to do, but, as I said, I have trouble concentrating on some kinds of reading these days; and that kind of reading is reading that isn't in super-simple, straight, words. The minute I start seeing "http://" (and particularly the rest of the codes) I get "mind-boggled". ) I thought, maybe, though, that "simplifying" (if that's what you'd call it) the instructions so that even a mind-boggled person can understand them might help a few other people on here too.
This isn't a reflection on other people's attempts to explain, but, at least for me, having letters substituting for what really needs to be there is causing mind-boggling.
Lisa HW, the following will do the job - no more, no less.
The referral trackers (also called "URL trackers") can be found under "URL Trackers" in My Account.
A) To set up a referral link that directs visitors to the HubPages signup page:
http://hubpages.com/_xyz/user/new
Simply replace "xyz" with your own referral tracker.
B) To set up a referral link that directs visitors to your profile page:
http://hubpages.com/_xyz/profile/Lisa+HW
Simply replace "xyz" with your own referral tracker.
It is either A or B each time, do not try to combine the two.
I have went under my account and do not see URL Trackers anywhere on the page. Is this URL Tracker section hidden under another name?
WE, thank you. It looks like I have it working.
Dolores, again, thank you for pointing it out.
Just for anyone else on here who may be a little mind-boggled, just enter the main HubPages URL, including the final /. Follow that immediately with one underscore, then immediately after the underscore enter your URL tracker. That should be followed by a /
Immediately after that there should be "user/"
Immediately after that there should be "new"
(No quotes in any of it, though.)
(Sorry to say the same thing others have already said, and I don't presume to be able to say it any better than anyone else; but since I had that trouble "digesting" some of it (for some reason that would seem hard-to-believe to anyone who knows how easy it is to do), I thought (yet) another way of wording things might help someone. )
Website Examiner, again, thanks.
and it even works! Once you see how easy it is to do it's hard to figure out what the big deal was.
Its only the direct to new user sign up page that even requires this much thought -
Otherwise, the link to this page option on the bottom of every page on Hubpages.com will set this up for you automatically.
You only need to manually create the sign up link http://hubpages.com/user/new/ because the footer option does not appear while logged in.
Lisa - I checked out your link and of course it told me that I was already signed up, so it works. I had a friend try mine from another computer and it popped up "this user does not exist" which I found pretty funny. But I think that I fixed it. Will test it on another computer tomorrow. We will see.
I thought if they clicked on "join" at the top of our profile page, we'd get credit??
i tried to do this earlier, but one of those blonde moments, i got lost and after reading the help in here.. i'll try it tomorrow, its 1.30am an i guess i should go to sleep haha, maybe..
Okay, let's say one of my friends wants to join HP. She goes to my profile page and clicks "join." Do I get credit?
I tried to answer that. Without the referral tracker, there is no way for HubPages of knowing that she is your friend.
http://hubpages.com/forum/post/1167935
I have also learned a lot today.thanks for the question and for the wonderful answers.stay blessed friends.
I feel so stupid! I have people wanting to join HP, but I still don't know how to do it! I created a new tracker for this called "habeejoin." I posted it on my profile page. what else do I have to do?
The tracker link you currently have on your profile page does not lead to the signup page. So you should replace that with a link pointing to the URL provided below. You can also insert that into emails etc.
Here is your tracker link (URL) for signups:
http://hubpages.com/_REDACTED/user/new
(This based upon you telling me that your tracker's name is "REDACTED." If you change to a different tracker, simply replace "REDACTED" with the new tracker.
Thanks, WE. I think I did it right. I had just changed it before reading this. It should be right now.
Hooray! I got it, by George, I got it!!! Thank you, sunforged! This is what worked: http://hubpages.com/_3w0rc4a5smaev/user/new
What a mess, lol. Why can not HP just post a URL somewhere on our account that we can simply copy/paste. I know I DO NOT have the link on my profile simply because it is much too challenging for me.....me with certification in computers, lol.
I shall wait until someone posts a URL link that I can simply copy/paste on my account.
WELL.....I had it on my profile, but with changing the profile over to the new format, I lost it and now have 2 close friends that have signed up, but do NOT show on my referral tracker....any help out there from the powers that be??....Please and thank you....
Greatly need an update on how to do referral trackers with new profile.
The only place in the new profile that will let you add a URL with a HubPages signup tracker is if you use the "my website" slot.
I just tried that and it worked except you cannot include the http:// part of it.
Thanks for the info!

by Michelle Dee 11 years ago
Do you still put a tracker link in your hubs?In all of my hubs I have a link in a blue box with a referral tracker with a heading offering to sign up with Hubpages to write articles. Is this still a good idea for new hubs since all the changes?
by Donna Janelle 14 years ago
I read a hub on this subject and tried to figure it out myself, but I am honestly still very confused on how I would go about doing this. If anyone has any tips, suggestions, or step by step instructions that would be wonderful!

I would really appreciate it if someone could give me a step by step explanation of how to get a sign up referral link on one's profile page.So far, I've wasted 4 weeks here because none of the methods I have used have worked. That's because there isn't a single page that I can find on this site...
