I don't think I can name just 5, here are some in no particular order: John Fahey, Bob Dylan, John Lee Hooker, Robert Pete Williams, Woody Guthrie, Rev. Gary Davis, Dock Boggs, V.M. Bhatt, Ernest Ranglin, Gil Scott Heron, Captain Beefheart, Clarence Gatemouth Brown, Albert Collins, J.J. Cale, Tom Russell, Kool Keith, Townes Van Zandt ...

Hmm ...  I'm always responsible for my actions.

The first two records I remember putting on the turn table myself (circa 1982) were my brother's -- AC/DC's Dirty Deeds Done Dirt Cheap and J Geils Freeze Frame.  The cassette came into vogue by the time I was buying my own music (although now I have a large collection of LPs).

Can't think of any right now.

I'm pretty lost when it comes to music of the 80's, 90's and 00's.   Introduce me to some modern music that I would like.

You have got some serious taste.
Okay, if there is a hip-hop record for you it's the one "Doo-Bop"  Miles Davis did with Guru from Gang Starr

or the 2nd AND COMPLETELY SLEPT ON Hip-JAZZ CLASSIC album by Digable Planets called Blowout Comb!

I also think you would enjoy DJ Shadow and Pimp Daddy Nash!

For your new blues songbook, checkout Cassandra Wilson

OR Sharon Jones and the Dap Kings which i found a cool vid for!

      1) ~~  Name Your 5 Favorite Artists

Tori Amos, Fiona Apple, Tracy Chapman, Nirvana, Radiohead, Deftones maybe...

      2) ~~  Name the only song that you are not responsible for your own actions should it be played in your drunken presence! You'll dance, sing, whatever!

Umm, "Jump Around" by House of Pain if I have to pick something.

      3) ~~  Name a few musical influences/moments that your parents/siblings gave you and you treasure the moment forever.

I remember listening to Born on the Bayou by CCR when we took my dad's boat out on the lake.

      4)  ~~  Name the song that pisses you off most and why!

I'm going to pull a Sarah Palin and answer a completely different question. The song that makes me *saddest* is Brick by Ben Folds Five.

      5) You're busy.  ~~ Name the artists that intrigue you the most but have no time to investigate but just want me to trim the fat and give you the best possible intro to.

I have bookmarked one song by each of the following artists on Pandora: Natalie Walker, Regina Spektor, and Azure Ray. I don't actually know anything about any of them beyond the fact that I must have liked something by them enough to save it.

Runner Ups:  The Racanteurs, Cold Play, Jimi Hendrix, The Decembrists, Neutral Milk Hotel, Roxy Music, Elvis Costello, Otis Redding, James Brown, Bob Marley,Al Green

    2) ~~  Name the only song that you are not responsible for your own actions should it be played in your drunken presence! You'll dance, sing, whatever! - Atomic Dog by George

Runner Ups:  When I'm drunk, I also like Abba (especially Waterloo), Disco (especially Ring my Bell or anything by Donna Summer and "Groove is in the Heart" by Deee-lite).

    3)  ~~ Name a few musical influences/moments that your parents/siblings gave you and you treasure the moment forever:  Abba, Van Morrison, Disney songs, Beatles, Prince

    4)  ~~  Name the song that pisses you off most and why!  - Right now, the song that pisses me off in a really good way is John Lennon's Imagine because we are so far away from the Dream.  :-)

I love them.  How did you know that "Lovely Day" is one of the songs most frequently stuck in my head???

      Now for the survey answers:

      1) ~~  Name Your 5 Favorite Artists
      -Taj Mahal
      -Mystik Journeymen
      -Hieroglyphics
      -Scissor Sisters
      -Tom Petty
(Good luck trying to deduce some sort of cohesive musical philosophy from those.)

      2) ~~  Name the only song that you are not responsible for your own actions should it be played in your drunken presence! You'll dance, sing, whatever!
"Firefly Rebellion," by Mystik Journeymen, for sure.  "Deceptacon," by LeTigre is a close second.

      3) ~~  Name a few musical influences/moments that your parents/siblings gave you and you treasure the moment forever.
-My dad brought home the greatest hits of Elton John and the greatest hits of the Police on the same day, when I was a kid.  They're now forever linked in my mind.
-My mom dancing to Emmylou Harris while baking fresh bread.
-My sister (who is older than me) teaching me lyrics to rap songs while I was still in elementary school, and then showing my skills off to her friends.

      4)  ~~  Name the song that pisses you off most and why!
Currently, "I Kissed A Girl" by Katy Perry.  It's offensive!  It's all about bisexual behavior as an attention-seeking exhibitionism, and promotes misconceptions about women who are actually bi/lesbian/queer.

      5) You're busy.  ~~ Name the artists that intrigue you the most but have no time to investigate but just want me to trim the fat and give you the best possible intro to.
      I trust you... wink

    Jamie:

    You. Are. A. Genius.

I must, however, point out that my hip hop tastes usually tend toward things more modern than Disposable Heroes, seeing as I was just a little kiddie when they were at their peak, though I do have an appreciation for what they did... not only because they brought on Charlie Hunter, a grad of my own Berkeley High School... but also because they addressed hard issues.

Have you heard "Firefly Rebellion" by Mystik Journeymen?  It is the origin of one of my favorite lines EVER in rap:

"I kick that foo' in the head with my shoe!"

Well that was cool.  I'd never heard them before.  Some deep thought and solid flow out the West Coast.  Props to you Maddie.

First of all I assume that you are my age 37 which is clearly NOT the case.

Make your you are hip to LUPE & M.I.A. & GNARLS b/c they are the future!

Wow, my favorite 5 are all over the freakin' place and they change all of the time. I also tend to follow just songs as opposed to artists...kinda weird, I know, but it's how I roll.

A few that I like right now are: Coldplay, Moby, ATB(techno), Kings of Leon, Dave Matthews Band, The Flaming Lips, Stereo MCs, Tom Petty, The White Stripes and Death Cab For Cutie.

I would say most songs can easily get me doing irresponsible things if I've been drinking.

I remember getting crazy to an old Chuby ChecJKer 'Twist' record at my grandma's house when I was really young...that was awesome. I also remember my parents rocking out to Willy Nelson, Alabama, Kenny Rogers and Neil Diamond in the car when I was a young pup. When my older brother and sister starting listening to NWA, Dr, Dre and Eazy-E that was quite an experience as well. smile

    Anything by Celine Dion.

I really wish that I could have lived through the 70s, so I'd like to hear some old-school funk and some glittery disco tunes. Get that disco ball turning and strap on those roller skates, baby!

Have you ever heard FRISCO DISCO by Eastside Connection?   Hilariously bad and very gay but the ending w/ the Slick Rick "Mona Lisa" sample and then the airline flight outro are amazing!

      http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=JAxCRuCj9BU
The song completely changes at the 4:20 point.

Fear not on the funk, my next hub is going to blow away all previous ones!

It will feature live footage from a club, b-boys and b-girls tearing it up to that chunky funk!
and a dope list of the Freshest B-Boy Funk Anthems Ever!

Pink Floyd, U2, Genesis, Kane (Dutch band), DJ Tiësto are only five of them, but that’s what you want, right? smile

Could be anything. I’ll sing with songs/artists I hate if I’ve had enough.

My parents played a lot of jazz. At the time I hated it, but in due time I learned to appreciate it better. Neil Diamond was quite popular. He’s not on my list of favourites, though.

Anything from James Blunt. He’s a fretful, whiny singer. Total whimp.

I saw quite some names in the lists that preceded mine.

Jamie, have you ever heard of Cheb Khaled?  I think the chorus of his song "Aicha" would make an awesome hook for a hip hop song.  Tell me if I'm right:

    http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=iIyyPsqRweE

Plus, if you understand French, the lyrics are awesome.  (My favorite part is in the bridge.  Roughly translated: "Bars are still bars, even when they're made of gold.")

The Danish group Outlandish attempted to make an R&B version of this song, which just didn't cut it for me.  First of all, they changed the lyrics (I mean, besides translating them to English, they actually changed them), and it just doesn't pack the punch I think the original does.
