What is the Theory of Everything (ToE)?

Laws of the Cosmos Linked to Bar Codes?

Theory of Everything: An Element of Theory of Information?

Theory of Everything

Theory of Everything would unify all the fundamental interactions of nature, which are usually considered to be four in number: gravity, the strong nuclear force, the weak nuclear force, and the electromagnetic force. Because the weak force can transform elementary particles from one kind into another, the TOE should yield a deep understanding of the various different kinds of particles as well as the different forces. The expected pattern of theories is:

Theory of Everything

  • Gravity
  • Electronuclear force (GUT)
  • Color force
  • Electroweak Force
  • Strong Force
  • Weak Force
  • Electromagnetism
  • Electric Force
  • Magnetic Force

Theory of Everything and Philosophy

The status of a physical TOE is open to philosophical debate. For instance, if physicalism is true, a physical TOE would coincide with a philosophical theory of everything. Some philosophers - Aristotle, Plato, Hegel, Whitehead - have attempted to construct all-encompassing systems. Others are highly dubious about the very possibility of such an exercise.

Information Theory

Developed by Claude Shannon, an American mathematician his work created the science of information that has found its way into a host of applications from broadcasting to bar codes.

New Area of Information Theory with Profound Implications for the Nature of Space and Time

Leading physicists believe Information Theory holds the key to understanding the most profound unknowns in the cosmos, including the nature of black holes to the meaning of reality.

The creation of life requires huge amounts of information. DNA transmits this information. Nature evolved genes according to principles of the Information Theory.

The Key to the Cosmos

Emerging as a key element is Information Theory in the quest to find the holy grail of theoretical physics – the Theory of Everything (ToE). This is a theory that aims to sum up in a single equation, the origin and nature of the cosmos and the forces acting within. A huge hurdle is combining the two most successful theories in science: quantum theory – governs the sub-atomic world, and Einstein’s General Theory of Relativity – explains gravity in terms of the effect of mass on space and time. These theories conflict: according to quantum theory, gravity is transmitted from place to place by “carrier particles,” while relativity see gravity as the result of the curvature of space and time. ToE seeks to unify these two radically different concepts.

Physicist Roy Frieden, University of Arizona, argues the laws of physics are a means for extracting information about the nature of reality claims to have found a means of obtaining them all from principles of information theory.

Principle of Least Action

By inserting the right “key” into a technique known as the Principle of Least Action, it’s possible to derive the laws of physics. Frieden claims the answer may be in the fundamental notion that lies behind information.

The search for the simple question about what information really is may lead to a link between the laws of the cosmos and bar codes on our groceries!
