Are you or have you ever been a member of a book club?

I am thinking of how fun and interesting it would be to join a book club.  I have never done so before, and for some reason it sounds like an interesting endeavor.  If you have ever joined a book club, was it a positive experience and did you meet new friends?  Are you currently a member of a book club?  Have you hosted a book club in your home or elsewhere?  If I am unable to find one locally, I wonder what is the best way to get the word out locally to host one in my home.  Around these parts, normally, we have Bible studies in  our home.  Thank you for sharing.

My gosh, Faith, I have often considered joining or starting a book club. I think it would be fun. Our local Barnes and Noble used to have a book club one night per week and I never found the time to join. Now that I have more time on my hands, I will look into it more seriously. I did sit in on a few of the meetings at BnN and it was very interesting. Every one was so relaxed and really enjoyed the evening. Thanks for asking this question - you have motivated me to join or start a club. I will follow this thread to see what experiences others have had.

Hi Phyllis, I know what you mean, and I do not know why I have never considered it before!  Oh, that is interesting about the BnN meeting.  I truly think it would be interesting and who knows, meet new friends with common interests...that is reading!

Wow; been a lot of years ago but I was in Book of the Month Club and then there was another one after that with the new paperback choices and then not long after that I had my own book store so I had about anything I could ever want to read and my kids too so it was really great!

Hahaha, hmm, drink friendly?  I guess that is up to the host of the book club ... a glass of Merlot is fine ... : )  Thank you for answering.  I think a book club is a fun idea for sure, drinks or not ..

I'm not but my mom is. She loves the various reads the book club recommends because it takes her into genres she normally wouldn't choose. She's typically a historical/non-fiction reader. Recently her book club recommended The Cinderella Murder by Mary Higgins Clark & Alafair Burke. They read the book, then attended a lecture/book signing event. My mom met MHC and had her copy of The Cinderella Murder autographed. Knowing I'm a fan of fiction, my mom sent the novel to me. Very cool that I have an autographed copy of a novel written by a best-selling author to add to my library!

If you'd like to start your own book club/reading group or want to see if there's one in your area, go into www.meetup.com. There you can put in your city/town to find the active groups in your area. You can start one up there, too. Many groups meet in homes, restaurants, libraries, etc.

Wow, Sha, that is cool and then some! Now, that is what I am talking about ...the added bonus of going to a book signing. Thank you for sharing all and about the meet up, which I would not have guessed that's what it is LOL. Another awesome answer!

You're welcome, Faith. You'll find all kinds of local groups on meetup.com. I hope you find what you're looking for. If not, what the other groups are doing should give you a good idea as to how to get a reading group together, venue to choose, etc.

Me too, Sha. Yes, that is a good point too about getting ideas on how to start one myself and where would be the most appropriate meeting place. Blessings
