What are the ways that overprotective parents don't respect, even love their children?
How do overprotective parents view their children as somewhat inept, incompetent, & even slow? Parents are overprotective of their children because somehow they view their children as not being capable of handling & interfacing with their environment properly. They really don't have confidence that their children are & /or will be competent. They also believe that somehow their children don't have the wherewithal to handle & solve whatever problem comes their way.
When parents are overprotective:
* they teach the child that the child isn't capable, undermining willingness to try
* they intervene so often the child doesn't get the experience trying and learning to do things right
* the parents make excuses and offer assistance instead of strengthening those skills, so the child has excuses for not doing well and the help doesn't actually help
It is like someone saying the child is behind on physical standards, and instead of altering the diet and getting physical therapy to improve, the helicopter parents get a wheel chair, doctor's notes and push them around, always pushing the kid back in the chair so that they don't have to walk.
