I really would like to hear from the people here. Do you believe that ghosts exist. What do you think about them. Do you have a ghost story that happened to you. I myself grew up not believing in ghosts and then for several months after my grandmothers death I saw her ghost. Over the years since then I have saw many more. How about you?

Nope. But I don't believe in any invisible people, including ghosts, angels, devils, the invisible pink unicorn, gods, or any of their relatives.

Sometimes, when I feel like the story is more important than reality, I like to believe in aliens and Bigfoot. I know these are just fantasy, but they're at least more plausible than an afterlife.

I however have seen ghosts. So I know they exist. I also believe in aliens and I really think their has to be something to Big Foot. I believe something exists.

Hmmm.... well, without some kind of proof, I'm still gonna go with "nope." Sure, you say you saw your dead grandmother. But, um, people say all kinds of things on the Internet. For that matter, people say all kinds of things in real life. And you might not even be lying-- you might really believe you saw it. But without some kind of really solid evidence that wasn't doctored, I'm still gonna go with "nope."

Also, I find it telling that this thread is in Entertainment instead of Religion. If you REALLY saw ghosts, then I think you wouldn't put it in the same classification as American Idol and the new Star Trek movie.

(Edited because I confused aunts and grandmas....)

In this scientific age, there can be no ghost.   Thinking about a dead person continuously may be felt as ghosts.... the dead person's manners, movements, speeches, etc. will go on repeating when we are half sleep.  If we are alert, that too will not be felt.

When a hot debate about the existence of god is going on world-wide, including this HP, it is really amusing to see another debate rising...

I don't believe in ghosts. However, I believe in the existence of evil spirits masquerading as the ghosts of a deceased person. I'm from Africa - that kinda weird stuff is pretty common place here, no kidding. But ever wonder, why a ghost of someone who loves you would keep appearing to you, and making your life a living nightmare. Why? When you're dead, you're dead.

Well, I have seen too. It happened when i was at Class 9. My aunt was admitted in a Hospital around 150 kms from my home town and was supposed to undergo a surgery. I was sitting at my uncles place chatting with his wife and eating the snacks she offered. Suddenly my aunt came to the room where we were sitting and we both were happy to see her. My uncles wife offered snacks and turned to take a plate for her and suddenly my aunt vanished. We were astronished because she did  not talk to both of us  and then thought that she might have gone to my dads elder brothers house which was next door only. Suddenly the telephone rang and we got the news that my aunt died while on surgery. We were shocked because we saw her only minutes ago.

What is more amazing is that though both of us knew that she was in the hospital both of us forgot that the moment when we saw her.

I haven't yet, but like to see or meet one!

However, I have heard lot of events of ghost.  the one i remember is that of an arab family in UAE.  A ghost seems to have appeared in a bathroom.  And the whole family was scared of going to bathroom for weeks.

Also in UK there are several vacant homes and villas - left empty because of stories attached to them being hunted houses!

No I have no problem with what you wrote because until I saw the things I saw I never believed in them either. But I have saw a lot of things. And I'm not sure about some of what I saw. Some of it was confusing as hell. But I really do like hearing what other people believe. I really do.

Just because you can't prove it doesn't make it unreal.  I for one am a believer.

    1. mortaine profile image63
mortaineposted 14 years agoin reply to this

See, now, here's where you and I will have to simply disagree. Lack of scientific proof does, in fact, equate to "not real" in my mind. It's not that *you* have to prove it-- it's that some sort of scientific study has to prove it. To date, that hasn't happened.

Also, it's okay with me if *you* believe in ghosts. You probably also believe in god. For all I know, you might also believe in the tooth fairy. Do I think you're wrong? Yes. Do I think I need to change your mind? Not really.

Which might make you wonder why I replied at all. The original question was asking if we believe in ghosts, and the original poster says she's interested in all answers. So, since I know most people replying are probably ghost-believers, I thought it would be helpful to add the voice of a non-believer to the mix.

The hard proof that ghost don't exist is that there is no hard proof that they do exist.

I am open to anything but when it comes to the supernatural I cannot be turned to believing that people pass away and then come back to earth to roam.

Would be really interested in what you think about the ghost photos there. At least it is a little hard evidence.

    1. mortaine profile image63
mortaineposted 14 years agoin reply to this

I really think photo artifacts and after-images don't constitute hard evidence. Very easy to fake. Very easy to mistake. Film images are notorious for artifacts and double-imaging. Digital images are especially prone to manipulation.

Why would someone take a photo in 1891 of an empty chair at a funeral? At the time, film was expensive and photography was time consuming. People didn't go around photographing their furniture. They did, however, go around positioning a guy in a chair, snap a shot, then re-shoot the same frame of film with the chair empty to create a ghostly image.

Evidence is something repeatable, measurable, identifiable.

I continue to maintain that this thread belongs in Religion.

If I had to believe anything then this is what it would be, but then you have to question how and why the images are being projected and why more than others? It also does not back up why some people feel a chilling draft when they are in a haunted environment.

With regards to the photos, I cannot believe them; some are blatant fakes and you can tell a mile off. I would like to be proved wrong though if any more are available?

I don't believe in ghosts! I reject the whole notion! Why would they exist? Why would they haunt us in ways that would leave us with doubt when they could just as easily let us know for certain they exist? I come to this conclusion even though I had an experience that to this day I can't explain. I retired early from a holiday party to my hotel room. The hotel is more than 100 years old and is rumored to be haunted. Doors opening and closing by themselves and shades falling down. Supposedly from the ghost of someone that dies in the hotel. On this particular night I was alone and had just gone to bed when I felt the bed shake ever so slightly from headboard to foot board. I immediately became very alert and aware of all of my surroundings thinking perhaps I imagined it when it happened again! I still can't explain this and I can't see why a ghost would do such a thing. If it was a ghost, why shake the bed and why so slightly? Why not tap me on the shoulder, or shake me directly?

There's no such thing as ghosts, but there is a trick of memory [or glitch] in which a person you' ve just been thinking about - image - can remain in the subconcious window of your mind for about 3 seconds after you wake up, or you come alive again following a bout of deep thought.

It happened to me once and was quite an experience, I was waking up and saw my long dead Mother-in-Law [mhdsrip] she was stood watching me from the foot of my bed, I was waking up and I actually said to her "O Freda, [her name] look at your hair". You see she had gone bald, I reached out to stroke her head, to ruffle it, and she vanished. She appeared to go through the wall and dissapear. This wall trick is the clue, all good ghosts do it, and its an optical illusion. She was not there?

The snag is, and this is a real puzzler:

How did I know in my waking up dream that she would have aged 25 years since her death, that through the passage of time she had to be almost bald by now, and how did I create a persons image well known to me who had gone bald with a few wispy hairs on her scalp? This ghost image was most definitely my mother-in-law. She died aged 66, and when I recreated her she was age 91, I wish it would happen again - but no such luck. We can conjure up visions, sadly its a trick that we have no control over. From this optical illusion you have the idea that there's an after life and an heaven, there isn't, but thats for you to decide!

Yes, I not only believe in ghosts, but know there are spirits as I call them. Some visions can be a figment of our imagination,  such as when we are over tired and our mind may trick us, but others are real.  I have written hubs about this.

My sister went to see the famed George Anderson who is a medium and has written several books; he knew her son's name and the condition he died of, and gave other precise information as he was connecting to my nephew. There was no way for him to research the info, such as sis pet name as kid.  In another instance, another medium passed on messages with a woman's name,  details of a piano and an apple song, that had nothing to do with my sister, so she was confused, that is until she shared this message with a regular customer at her boutique; it was the customer's  deceased mother's name and message. The customer turned pale at the thought her mom came through, but declined to pursue it further as it goes against her religious beliefs.

The skeptics would probably think folks like me are lying or making things up, but I am not a deceptive person, no reason to do this.  I have the phone number of a genuine medium in NY who has a long waiting list as she is in high demand. Anyone wants it, I will post it in the forum. She does one on one  and also phone spirit communications, and she will, if she connects to you, give you details that no one but the person asking for the reading and the loved one who passed away would know,  her accuracy can shake up a skeptic!  smile  I  have not experienced a reading with her, my sister has, as mentioned.

Thanks for all the great comments. Yes I know for a fact that there are ghosts. I have seen many and also have been where there was high poltergeist activity. I was wide awake when I and my brother saw my Grandmother. My Mother and cousins also saw her many times. She appeared to me at least 12 times over several years time.

I was taken by a Priest friend of mine to a furnished but empty home and there was a lot of things flying around the room and falling off shelf's etc. We also heard hob nail boots walking down wooden stairs and saw the dust raise up but never saw a ghost or human form.

I have been on two separate American Indian reservations and was taken to two different haunted locations. One a cave and one a cabin.  Both were haunted and we saw ghosts in both. In the cave was a fire you could see with a man at it until you got so close and then there was no fire and no man. We were not doing any drugs or alcohol and there were five men who all saw the same thing.

I've seen a ghost when I was a kid. It was a lady wearing a white silhouette and she seems like she's floating in the air. As a kid I never would've imagined something like that really do exists. Another experience of mine was when I shared an apartment with 3 other colleagues, I didn't know that the house was in fact haunted. There's a doppleganger that copies your form or one of your family member's. There's a ghost of a man inside the bathroom. I only lasted 3 months in that apartment and more often I get to sleep there only in the morning.

I believe they spirits  who have not rested in being past away. There desire to stay is so strong they don't get past this plain into the next.Sometimes they need a little help to move on.Which leads me to another question about re incarnation. Is it possible for the spirit to choose to live out life again as someone else to learn a new lesson in life they didn't learn the first time around?

Those who've read my hubs and comments already know I'm a couple of bubbles off center, but at the risk of being labeled a *total* nutcase, I *know* ghosts exist because I've seen many, had lengthy conversations with a few, and regularly feel the presence of several who remain invisible.  I'm also a sporadic psychic, a trait inherited from my father's Swedish mother.  As for *proof* that ghosts exist, I'll paraphrase Jerry Lewis: 'For those who understand, no explanation is necessary.  For those who don't, no explanation will be sufficient'.  You either have the ability to see beyond the veil or you don't.

As for reincarnation, *of course* the soul can return in a new body to learn life lessons not mastered in previous lives, similar to how as children, we move from grade to grade in elementary and high school, and maybe college.  Could a first grader grasp the mechanics and concepts of English Lit?  Of course not.

Very interesting thread. I for the most part believe something is going on.I can't say what it is. But I never did believe in spooks, don't know yet. But what really made me aware of this phenomenon was a dog I had years ago that saw and chased something that had been disturbing my wife and kids at night in the old house we had purchased. I just laughed it off and told them they watched too many movies.
Then we got a dog from the humane society and it really got weird. The dog chased the 'whatever it was' away one night when it awakened me and I witnessed the whole thing. I never saw the 'thing', but that dog went nuts.

I don't know what it was, I was not drunk or on any drugs. The disturbances abated permanently.

I don't know what to think about this, other than if a dog sees it or senses it, something is there.

Maybe it's just some kind of energy left over that plays like a video?

Ghosts, demons or parallel universe -- I know something is out there!

When I was in elementary school I got up to use the bathroom one night.  Out the living room window I saw a gathering of men in white robes and hoods.  They were holding pitchforks, scathe and other farming tools.  They were gathered around an upside-down U shaped wooden structure that had a guy tied to the top of it and a small fire under it.  The man had been badly beaten, his white shirt was all bloody.  The men in white robes were circling the structure, making quite a bit of noise.  Then one, presumably the leader, stopped and raised his hands.  Every one stopped and sent up a loud cheer.  I ran back to bed as fast as I could, and lay listening for what seemed like hours.  I never heard a sound, except my younger brother getting up to use the bathroom, and then tearing back to bed.

It was years later before I ever encountered anything about the KKK, but immediately recognized the robes and hoods.  This gave me courage to speak of what I had seen.  It was then that I found out that my brother had seen the man on the structure and the one robed man.  He said there had been plenty of farm tools and clubs laying on the ground, and that the grass had been trampled greatly.

    Just for the record:
    1. The man on the structure was white with shoulder length curly brown hair.
    2.  There was no sign of any such activity in the day light, though I was scared to look out that window for years to come.
