Healthy Preparation of Cold Fruit Salad

Like I always say, summer time is fun time and while enjoying summer activities and the fruits, flowers and vegetables are fresher than ever people like to eat fruits and vegetables during summer. Fruit salad is easy to prepare and make, actually you can make it in one go, all you need is a mixing bowl large enough to mix the fruits and some ingredients like sweeteners, low fat, low carb -- low sugar content ingredients and you are ready after refrigerating it before serving. Serve it cold and you gotta enjoy it.

My mother when we were younger make it a point that we always have fruit salad in the refrigerator that is why i grew up eating lots of fruits as I am used to eating it. Usually we use tropical fruits as that is what is available in Asian countries. Fruits like apples, strawberries -- and the many variety of berries are a little bit expensive as we don;t grow them. Here in the US, all fruits become bigger and varieties of fruits to choose form widens for me. I can now peruse apples, strawberries and peaches as they are available and cheaper.

Healthy Preparation of Cold Fruit Salad

From buying to cutting fruits for the fruit salad, there are techniques to it :

Fresh fruits are always the best-- Buying and fresh fruits are always prefer than the canned fruits, of course because there are healthier too. If you cna buy organic then it is better form the fresh markets or supermarkets.

How to know if fruits are fresh

  • It is firm and not mushy - firm
  • No brown color on it -- sign of decay
  • At worst it might have worms on it
  • The leaves like for example the pineapple is still green
  • Both the end of the fruit where it is connected to the stem is not brown

Washing Fresh Fruits: Washing is simple and easy, after singing the ABC, then you're done. You don't need to soak the fruits just run it under cold water is best. Some people even buy the fruit soap, then they wash it with water, I just use the water in the sink, natural is always the best.

Peel fruits thinly and accordingly, just a little bit because some nutrients are in the peel of fruits like cantaloupe and apples

Cutting the fruits: it should be bite sized, for mushy fruit, cut it little bigger than the rest.

  • Bananas which are fresh should be cut bite sized like apples.
  • Apples and peaches should be cut appropriately like bit sized. Although because peaches are mushier, they should be bigger in size than the apple
  • Strawberries and grapes are usually smaller so it is good when eaten whole

Some used fruit cutter which can be bought in supermarkets or amazon.com and then you can just cut the fruits into desired chunks. there is also apple fruit cutter and for vegetables as well. There is a mini fruit cutter available too. For presentation purposes and children will really like the fruit salad if the fruits are nicely presented.

Deseed fruits which have seeds, although others say that seeds are healthy as long as you chew it, but some seeds are bitter and may make the taste of fruit salad bad

Preparing your Fuiit Salad

All you need is a large mixing bowl and knife plus chopping board and the fresh fruits ingredients. After cutting all the fruits together, mix them and then put your desired ingredients, low sugar content yogurt, low fat milk and honey according to your taste. Fruits which are fresh and properly riped are sweet enough and juicy.

Put the fruit salad mixed in the refrigerator two hours before serving.
