I will have to say bread/dough. The use of bread dates back past biblical days. It is used in every country and in every culture. The styles of bread used differs greatly, but it is a staple in every country. Dough is fried, baked, boiled in order to create a large variety of different foods. I guess if you want to really get specific, it would have to be grain (wheat).
How do you like your bread?
Rice. China contains 1/4 of Planet Earth population and all Chinese eat rice. It would be enough to say that rice is the most popular food, but as we know all Asia people eat rice, most of Africans eat rice, most of South Americans eat rice, many North Americans eat rice and many Europeans eat rice.
For many people it is general food.
