   Well done Larry and the team...This will be a great addition to Hubpages especially targeting new hubpages for specific keywords within categories, sort of gives added help with having categories like these....Plus some of the sub categories are already giving me ideas about new hubs.

   I have a silly question, but I am going to ask it anyway because maybe someone else is wondering too.  Will we have to preselect the categories before writing, or will the software be able to detect which category the hub belongs to?  Just curious .

      When you start a new hub, the process should be very similar to the way it is now.
      
      Instead of selecting the first tag from a drop down list (as is currently the case), a user will select the top level category from a drop down list.
      
      Then, the user will have a choice of creating additional tags or selecting 2nd and 3rd level categories.  Both of these types of choices would be optional.
      
      You will also be able to change the category later if you like both before you publish and after.
      
      We are still working through the exact process with the goal being to keep category selection and tag selection as simple as possible.

   I honestly don't like the idea of Books being in the "Entertainment" category.  I wouldn't expect to find them there, and I certainly wouldn't expect to find topics related to writers rather than readers (we don't write for entertainment, you know!).
   
   Why not make the "Arts" category "Arts and Literature" instead?

      You've touched on a really interesting point.  From my view, there are three ways to look at books:
      
      Book as Literature (an subject studied in school)
      Book as Craft (an artform where people seek to improve their skill)
      Book as Entertainment (think, bestsellers and romance novels)
      
      To address, we divided up books into three different top-level categories.
      
      Book as Literature is placed in the "Science & Education" category.  Perhaps, we should retitle it to be "Education & Academic Subjects"  The subcategory is "Literature"
      
      Book as Craft is placed in the "Art & Writing" category.  The subcategory is "Writing"
      
      Book as Entertainment is placed in "Entertainment"

   I think an entertainment category would be all the talk on Hub.  Would open up interesting topic of discussion though many may thing that Yahoo has a good handle on entertainment news.

   I'm going to be the one that is going to throw in one added point that might be the flip side of this "organized coin". I think our page views will go down and our hubs will be read by less hubbers... ????
   Now the hubs being listed as they are there are chances of more people reading 'off' topics that under regular circumstance the reader might not have been interested in and seeing it just made them nosey... if the reader automatically goes to the one subject they're interested in they will miss the extra hub.  I'm one of those readers if a title grabs my attention I will read the hub.
   
   Don't get me wrong I think it will be so great having everything organized into little categories but Hubpages is also great the way it is...Zsuzsy

      We wouldn't be making these changes if we felt that it would reduce the long term page views to the site.
      
      There might be a temporary decrease in pageviews when we first push out the new categories but we believe after that, traffic to each hub should increase as there will one more link (the category link) in addition to the existing links (tags, author links, etc.)

      I must say...the majority of my traffic comes from outside sources. While there are a lot of hubbers that read hubs, I think that the real goal for all of us is to draw readers from outside. This is good for us as individuals and for the site as a whole. This system of organization will make it easier to read hubs once here...I know that I don't read hubs very often by moving about the site because the organization isn't very good.

       Opera is currently listed under Performing Art in Art & Writing:
       
       One of the tough decisions we made was to divide Entertainment from Art.  In my view,  Opera is more a Performing Art than an Entertainment.

          Larry, the problem with separating Opera from Singing is - where do you draw the line?   Is Opera a performing art, and Operetta is an entertainment?  If Operetta is a performing art, what about the Three Tenors or Il Divo? 
          
          Is ballet a Performing Art but hip hop is Entertainment?  What about a contemporary dance show staged by a prominent ballet company, but featuring hip hop choreography?  Which one does belly dance fit into?  Is flamenco a performing art when it's in the theatre but entertainment when it's in cabaret?

                You can probably tell that I've been thinking about it more, too.  I originally resisted the idea of Performing Arts being part of Entertainment, but it was purely because the "Entertainment" category on other sites seems to be all about celebrities and nothing else.  Now I've seen the sub-categories under Entertainment it makes a lot more sense for Performing Arts to be there.  Putting them under "Art" makes them sound too high-falutin', whereas every performing artist wants their work to be accessible - plus as I pointed out, it gets hard to work out where the dividing line should be between the highbrow performing arts and the rest of the genre.

       The category will add another set of links to existing hubs.  If we do them right, we expect them to help with the relevancy of search results.
       
       There are no plans for this to affect user fan clubs.

    I think there should be a specific category for "top 10" lists. They don't always fit into a specific style or genre of music.

    I don't feel there are very many catagories that narrow down the hubs at ALL, never mind adding one as generic as Entertainment!
    
    Wow!  How much more generic can it be than that?  There would/will be 100's upon 100's
    of *things* that ppl think of as entertainment that will simply be lost in the rubble and I feel that is pointless.

       I am not clear on your point.   Entertainment is just the top level category.  Each category breaks down into three-levels of detail.

    I think an Entertainment category will bring an entirely new group of readers to our Hubpages community. As long as we are sure to link up our articles and use trackers, we all could gain from this new readership. Entertainment and reality TV is such a big genre and has a huge following, around the world.

    I was poking around the other day and I was surprised to find that there is very little in the way of hubs about music and/or musicians.  There were virutally NO requests along that line.  Entertainment, especially music, has such a heavy impact on our lives, I don't understand how this can be possible.  We are missing a HUGE audience by not having those types of articles.  I wrote a hub on Nikki Sixx and it has stayed as the top performing hub since it was written.  It's not terribly in-depth, just your standard, birth, discography, etc, but it has performed very well.  I'm in the process of writing another hub about one of his band mates, I expect that it will perform equally well.
    
    I fully agree with adding an entertainment category, altough I expect that this will take some time, as people's definitions of entertainment vary.  (Perfect example, a guy I used to know thought it was very entertaining to shoot at squirrels from his front porch...I was not entertained in the least...)  Maybe something like a breakdown into music (this could break down into genres of music - rock, rap, jazz, classical, country, etc), television (reality tv, gameshows, series, news, etc - and of course some of those categories could break down too), performing arts (dancing, theatre, vocal, etc, with the appropriate breakdowns), .... idk i'm not an organizational genius, just ideas.

    coolz didn't know that existed...are you still working on this?  I only ask because the "dance" category seems a bit lacking...I used to dance, and when I did, I did ballet, tap, jazz, and hip hop, and I know that there are many more styles besides that I cannot remember at the moment.  There are also breakdowns possible within that if you wanted to go that far (i.e. dance attire (shoes, clothing, etc), music, disciplines (the first one to mind is a distinction in ballet between standard ballet and "toe" or "on point" ballet), etc.)  Not trying to be picky, just curious.

       Seems to me that the Movie Review sub-category under Entertainment might be of sufficiently wide interest to warrant a separate, more prominent category of its own. Hubbers might be encouraged to write reviews and recommendations wrt movies they have recently seen. These reviews might be picked up by newspapers and other publications many of which seem to be laying off their movie reviewers.

    I think sub categories are a great idea. When I am "searching" through the hubs using the search feature, it would be nice to be able to have an option to drill down into hubs by category. That way I could be sure to find only results that are very closley related to what I am looking for. I am relatively new to hub pages so forgive me if I didn't find this but I don't see an option to search categories/sub categories anyway.
