   here's a quote from Sarah Palin on Michelle's view of obesity
   
   "I think she has got a different worldview and she is not hesitant at all to share what her worldview is. And I will take heat again for saying it on your show Laura but she encapsulated what her view of America is, I believe, unless she has evolved and things have changed in the last two years, but she said it on the campaign trail twice that it was the first time that she had been proud of her country when finally people were paying attention to Barack Obama. I think that's appalling. We can think of this infinite number of reasons to be proud of American exceptionalism and it baffles me that anybody would have that view and then allow that view to bleed over into policy.
   
   
   Take her anti-obesity thing that she is on. She is on this kick, right. What she is telling us is she cannot trust parents to make decisions for their own children, for their own families in what we should eat. And I know I'm going to be again criticized for bringing this up, but instead of a government thinking that they need to take over and make decisions for us according to some politician or politician's wife priorities, just leave us alone, get off our back, and allow us as individuals to exercise our own God-given rights to make our own decisions and then our country gets back on the right track"

         Why would you not want your kids to eat healthy? Obviously obesity is a problem and it didn't just happen...
         
         This is nothing new...First ladies always have a cause. Were you also against the Nancy Reagan...just say no program? Have you been against the Presidents Council on Physical Fitness since the beginning?
         
         Back to Sarah, I love it when politicians who want to be part of the government always rail on against the government...

                     Actually, I agree with Palin.  Mrs. Obama and her husband should probably clean up their own eating habits before they push their ideas on anyone else.  By their own admission, they eat bacon, white bread, and many other 'bad' foods.  Obama still smokes doesn't he?  I don't want government in my food except for keeping it safe.  They're already pushing bioengineering, making certain crops pesticide and insect resistant.  Farmers are now able to use 5 times the amount of pesticides because corn, soy and other crops can resist them.  If something kills insects by causeing neurological damage, it will do the same to you.  I'm not a Palin fan, but I think Mrs. Obama should put her money where her mouth is - pun intended.

   I have strong views on this, but my short response is, go anywhere and and count out of every 10 people how many of them are obese. then pick a different group of 10, on and on. it is shameful. when you have obese adults, it's an uphill battle for the children. if schools can help, then by all means, let them help. It amazes me that people cannot see the importance of bringing down the rates of childhood obesity. they are after all our children, our responsibility. but like it or not, they are everyone's future.  quite honestly, I am appalled at the obesity in this country and the parents who don't care. someone has to care enough to take action.
   
   I have zero respect for Palin. I don't really see her advocating anything other than herself.

      People have been making decisions about what sorts of food kids have access to in school for decades. This is nothing new. If any Republican had suggested kids have a salad option in school, she wouldn't have made a peep.
      
      She's fearmongering, suggesting Michelle Obama wants kids to be force-fed salad at home, similar to her "death panels" b.s.

      Especially in isolated towns of Canada and USA that I read about in October, where the only grocery store nearby is a convenience store where milk cost $6.85 a litre in Can., $4.00+ a half-gallon in the US towns.
      
      Another media play may be biased - news shows interviewing families that eat regulary from the 99-cent menu at Burger King, because they say fresh food for a meal for four costs half-again to twice as much. The program showed high prices in the grocery, but how often does this occur across US, I wonder?

      Exactly were it gets complicated.  On the one hand I agree with Palin (never quote that), when it comes to food, the government shouldn't be trying to tell parents what they can feed their kids.
      They really don't have any jurisdiction there, I agree but...
      
      When it comes the the food choices available at school for school lunch and snack dispensers then they can say what goes in them and healthy choices are better choices. 
      
      When it comes to what you put in your child's lunch to take to school, then NO, they have no jurisdiction over that and I know that they really do try to do it.
      
      I gave my kid animal cookies last week in her lunch, she was told she cannot eat those.  I told my kid to tell whomever said that to "go kick rocks".  I gave them to her to eat, they cannot tell her NOT to eat them. 
      
      As for the choices that are causing obesity because of money issues, that is a tough one too.  People should be informed about what they are 'actually' eating when they go to McDonald's but it is definitely hard for a family to choose between buying 1 tomato for the same price as 1 cheeseburger from McDonalds.

         I don't think the government is telling parents what to feed their kids. I have yet to hear of anyone suggesting the government or school monitoring what parents pack for their kids' lunch for school.
         
         The problem is that parents usually don't pack their kids' lunch; they give them a few bucks and have no idea that coke and candy machines are all up and down school hallways. Corporate dollars have made junk easily accessible for kids nowadays, and I suspect parents have no idea since it wasn't that way when they were young.

            I think you misunderstood what I wrote.  When it comes to the choices made available in school, they should have healthy options, not coke, donuts, candy... in other words junk. 
            
            But it is a fact, I seen it first hand that some of the "employees" do over reach their boundaries when it comes to what the parents packed for their kids.

               Yeah, I agree with you. That school employee shouldn't have done that. If you actually pack your lunch for your kid, IMHO, you have probably thought about everything that goes into it and why. I have yet to hear of a parent packing a pound of candy for their kid for lunch.

   it's always a matter of choice when someone cares enough about something, they find a way to make it work. but it takes effort and educating yourself. teach your children how to grow a garden, how to can foods like our parents used to do. make your own bread.
   
   maybe the list of subsidized foods should be reevaluated.
   of course, corn is our biggest subsidy and it's in almost all processed foods in some form.

   If there is no one out there to teach us a better way, we will continue to do the things we have always done and think nothing of it.  But what if eating fat and fatty meats might actually be bad for us?  What if eating untold hundreds and thousands of calories each meal might make us obese?  Believe it or not, Ms. Palin, there are people out there who are unaware of how they are harming themselves.
   
   We have government placed roadsigns to keep us from driving off the cliff.  Is it not the implicit and perhaps actual duty of those who know the facts to disseminate those facts to all of us?  If Michelle Obama has some "hidden agenda" or even if she has thousands of dollars invested in the "salad industries", maybe I would suspect her motives.
   
   As far as I know she is simply a good soul concerned for the health of her fellow countrymen.
   
   As for the remark made by Ms. Obama about "for the first time" being proud of her country, I suggest Ms. Palin walk a mile in Michelle's shoes before she comment on that.  In WW II Black soldiers enlisted by the tens of thousands and were not allowed to serve in White units, and all too many Black soldiers were put to menial work, because their White officers doubted they would fight well and that manual labor was what they were best suited for.
   
   Even in my experience in Viet Nam Black soldiers were more likely than not to be the one's digging the ditches, and when in combat, took the point, the one most likely to be shot at first.
   
   This prejudice continues today when people think that the majority of people on welfare are Black.  Most welfare recipients are, in fact, White.  Michelle Obama recognizes that obesity is a learned experience, not a choice.  We are what we learned, and if we were not taught the facts, that certain foods and eating habits are bad for us, we tend to think they are OK.  Unfortunately, mainly due to neglect by education over the past 150 years, Black youths have not been as well educated as their White counterparts.  I believe we should all rejoice in someone like Ms. Obama who speaks out in favor of good healthhabits for all.  Isn't that what a responsible, patriotic American should do?
   
   Perhaps it's time in America to stop dividing us into neat but falsely labelled little groups, such as Conservative equals Fascist and Liberal equals Socialist/Communist.  Believe it or not, this nation was founded by people of widely different political philosophies and ideals, and only by accepting all views as legitimate did we survive this far.
   
   There is and can be no guarantee that this nation will survive this or any future crisis.  Abraham Lincoln wisely said that a nation divided against itself can not stand.  Both Conservatives and Liberals who work hard to divide us should take heed of that warning.
   
   The sooner we all realize that only by working together will we have a future, the sooner we can do what is good and ideal for ALL of us.

      Chef - with respect, anyone who is uninformed about food and living in the United States is either desparately poor and without access to media of any kind, or living under a rock and without access to media of any kind.  There has been ongoing information about the food supply in this country for probably the past 30 years and information has snowballed in the last 10.  There is information everywhere you care to look regarding the lack of nutrients, addition of fillers and sugars, and unhealthy fats to name a few things, in processed foods.  People who cannot afford excess quantities of food are far better off spending what they have on whole food which supplies proper nutrition.  They will need less because the body responds to the edification supplied by food in its original form.  Depleted food, even at 99c, supplies little nutrition causing the body to be unsatisfied, calories are empty causing the body to crave more food.   Reading labels is not a new idea.  If government wants to control what we eat, they should start with controlling the people who make 'virtual' food, it looks like food, has pictures of food on the box, but supplies very little the body can actually use.  In fact, in many cases it is non-food, doing more harm than good.

   it is obvious to thinking people that what michelle suggests is correct.we've all seen bristol on dance with the stars.looks like sarah would have been an excellent candidate for the advice. what palin hopes to do is get michelle to respond to her nonsense which will put her on a national level. validate her position and that's all she wants. in fact sarah needs a lot of the advice. she's currently divorcing due to adultery( thats seedy), daughters teenage pregnancy. on her show she tells those boys, " no boys past here" well too late sarah! the babbies daddy is a high school dropout and trying to be the mayor ha ha ha. she doesn't read anything and or if she does she doesn't know what it is. so sarah should follow in the obamas footsteps and maybe she wouldn't be divorcing, with overweight teen unwed mothers for children and she would be atuned to the problems in america.she wants to run america and she can't run her family!

    Do we think it is a coincidence that Michelle Obama chose a pro-produce campaign as First Lady?
    Who do we think benefits from this?
    Well, of course our kids benefit by being saved from the diseases associated with obesity (and of course those impending death panels).
    But who ELSE benefits?
    
    You guessed it -- the illegal aliens! Yes, those same illegal aliens who pick our lettuce and other vegetables and fruits (including TOMATOES -- which during one presidency were confused with vegetables).
    
    Think about it. I could expound upon this further, even going so far as suggest it's a great conspiracy by a minority policymaker (or influencer) helping other minority groups to the exclusion of "real" (meaning WHITE) Americans.
    
    Yes, I could say all those things. And if I did, I would sound almost as ridiculous as Mrs. Palin. Hopefully not quite as ridiculous, as my sentences are at least grammatical!
